Hi a newbie here. I have a Dell XPS 700 computer, just lately when I turn it on the fan starts lights come on and the screen is filled with absolute gobble de gook. after a while it is like looking at the matrix film where all that data is streaming from bottom to top. It is impossible to read anything on the screen. Sometimes, but not very often I can switch it on and it boots up perfectly, however if I download something or windows XP updates and requires a restart then it goes wrong again. I can put it into standby and leave for hours and when i return it works ok. when running there is no problem apart from a bit slow. so far it has failed to start for over a week now.
Any ideas as to whats wrong?

Thanks

He means you shouldnt have got a dell....it seems that your graphics card is going if its looking like Matrix lol, i would recommend contacting dell if you have warranty or giving us a budget and we can suggest a new gfx card

Thanks, If I'm honest the computer is rubbish, worst i ever brought. I had Dell fix it several times during its warranty, but sadly the warranty is now expired. There are 2 graphic cards in the machine and being unemployed I cannot afford new ones at this time, but just out of curiosity what would you recommend in the low, mid and high price cards.

Well maybe take one out and try each individual one...and try changing which port you use to connect your monitor...and the best suggestion would be a 4850,4870,5770 which are under 150 if you wanna spend more then go GTX 460.

Sorry for delay in replying. I have removed 1 graphic card and left one in situ, The machine powered up and now appears to be running ok. I cant afford to buy a new card, but its ok as I no longer play games on it, As long as existing card keeps going for at least a year, then I get a new comp. Thanks for help all who replied
