Hi guys i was thinking of getting a dell XPS 710 case from ebay any idea what type of mainboard it could take with little or no modding?

dell normally use custom made mobo's.

This being the case its always a mission to fit a standard atx mobo in.

Also worth checking on the psu front, again they quite often use a non standard shape and design psu :(

Could be a mission, sorry i cant be of more use though

Just buy a standard ATX case, not worth buying Dell properietary cases and trying to get standard PC parts to fit. Dell cases are low quality and a pig to work in.

The dell xps 700 and 710 cases are the same and ONLY take a (snigger) industry standard BTX mobo. So in theory if another manufacturer went off and made a BTX mobo it would fit. Dell and a couple of OEM's are the only ones adopting this design from Intel though, and I don't see anyone making these boards except Foxconn/Intel. The point is, forget about fitting an ATX board to this. Already tried. Also if you thought the stacker was heavy, wait till you get a load of this. It is easily 60lbs+ with everything in it. The sidepanels are nice, made from 2mm thick aluminium at least, but not annodised and scratch easily. The rest of the case is pretty much a steel chasis. The front grill just pops off and is made completely from plastic. The rear grill is also plastic. The sidepanel mechanism is the easiest I have seen but also the easiest to mess up. I forced it and ending up jamming one of the latches resulting in having to break the sidepanel off with a screwdriver. Do yourself a favour and your back and avoid this case.

I know which auction you are on about, its the only current one on the site. I must say the £100 the guy is asking for is VERY reasonable. Unfortunately if you did get a motherboard in there (which you wont), there's still the front power button and LED connectors to think about. Trust me ive tried it with 2 dell cases before and its NOT worth the hassle.

Well thanks for that guys looks like i might scrap that idea then and go for the coolermaster stacker case :D mind you its a shame dell have to make things so hard they could make a mint by selling there cases with standard mobo compatability.

Not really. All the 710's take standard video card, memory, etc..
The only bit that is proprietry on the 700 series is actually the btx mobo and the cooling but that is because they bought into this with Intel. A normal atx psu will fit in this case, and there is standard atx 24pin and 8pin eps. The front panel connectors are proprietry but you can get an adaptor for it from parts sales. If BTX took off in the morning you would have no problem replacing the motherboard with a 3rd party one I assure you.

Good choice, it's a nice case - this is a picture of my 810.

Stackers are the bee's knee's. I got sick of mine - won an Antec Titan 550 on the bay, received it today and then realised I wanted to stick with my stacker. Anyone want to buy an Antec Titan? :p
