I have just moved this over to this section from the Monitor section, so if any Dons want to delete the old one then feel free.

I'm really hoping someone on here can help me.

I have a Dell XPS notebook which I carry between work and home on a daily basis. I have recently bought a Samsung Syncmaster 226bw monitor for use at work - when I get into work I have a keyboard and mouse on my desk as combined with the monitor it enables me to use it more like a desktop.

Anyway, the problem is that each mornning when I connect my XPS to the monitor etc it only comes up with a maximum resolution of 1280x1024 - the maximum resolution of the monitor is 1680x1050. When I re-install the drivers and then reboot I get the max resolution 1680x1050 no problem at all. The installing of drivers each morning though is becoming a pain in the butt - I have tried several different drivers!!!

Can anyone help?

The native resolution of the Dell XPS is 1920 x 1200.
The native resolution of the Samsung Monitor is 1680 x 1024.

I've yet to use an external monitor with my M1710, but as a question, do you have all drvices inclusive of monitor connected to the laptop before powering on the latop?. I can't remember where, but I remember seeing somewhere within the nvidia drivers that you can make the external monitor into the primary, hopefully that should stop attempting to use the laptop's screen as the default.

Oh and please don't tell me that you use the laptops screen at 1920x1200, if so, how the hell can you read it! :o

I have plugged the monitor in when turned on and when turned off and it makes no difference. I also have the external monitor set to primary.

I like to leave monitors in their native resolution, so yes I do have my laptop monitor set to 1900x1200, I dont mind the small text at all. I prefer being able to fit more things on my screen at once - it helps for spreadsheets etc.
