Booted up my notebook at work this morning to be met by a black screen after the windows 7 logo. It didnt want to start.
On reboot again this happened...

Seems like a video card fault to me but i'm totally unsure as its been working fine all week and now this.

I would agree with in saying thats a gpu problem, do you have warranty on the laptop.

Yup, GPU fault. Common with the XPS M170 and 1710. A new GPU one will run you about £250, and you will need to disassemble the entire machine to install it, although it's not actually that hard to do.

Same happened to mine - luckily I had the extended warranty. Google it because there are some risky fixes that might work but involves putting the graphics card in the oven to make the cheap solder nvidia used reflow.

Edit because I still had this bookmarked :

Same happened to mine twice. It now sits in the garage out of use.

First repair worked for about 18 months. Second time it came back as beyond repair :(

No one actually sells new cards any more. They are all refurbs.

Wasn't there something on the news recently that Nvidia lost agroup lawsuit aabout the mobile chips. I remember reading that anyone with a problem with certain Nvidia mobile chips can either get money back for repairs or get their machine repaired free of charge/replaced...

May be worth looking it up (although it may be it only works if you're American).

Your laptop appears to be on the list, however whether you have to be American to take advantage I don't know.

Mine went too in m1710...it was pretty well unfixable accoring to a few PC shops...DELL said it would cost hundered to fix...so i clamied off my house insurance and said it got damaged when travelling :)
Got £1100 for it of them and bought a new G860 from Kobalt :D

Ouch - happened to mine last year - luckily I was at month 22 of 24 on the warranty! You do realise that Dell offer extensions to the warranty that you can buy at any time and they are reasonably priced (about £120ish for 2 years IIRC)... ;)

On a side note - very happy with the 1730 I got as a replacement from them free of charge, well worth *cough* extending that warranty *cough* ;)

I like this :D I'll give them a call this week and see about that extended warranty.

that's not bad at all - which card did you get, and have you got the warranty anyway now - well worth it as these problems often repeat themselves - the XPS service is second to none - well worth the cash!

7900gtx 512mb, i could have had a 7900 gs 256mb for £50 less but i thought stick to what was originally fitted.
I didnt go with extended warranty and instead plan to sell my xps and upgrade to something a bit newer now its repaired.

ahhh the ol XPS M1710 dead graphics card thing....Yeah the card died on mine twice.
Dell were good enough to fix mine both times (even upgrading it to a 7950GTX from a 7900) the first time.
I miss that laptop
