So Dell are crap.

I ordered a laptop with 480Gb HD, it arrives with 320. I ring and they say that they'll send me a 320Gb HD for me to change for a 160Gb, rectifying the problem... don't get anything.

A week passes, I phone back, and they tell me that they can't send me an extra HD, they will give me £100 or replace the system - which do I want? I tell them I'll think about it.

In the next 24hrs, I get a couple of crashes and a BSOD, it tells me to run the memory test thing, so I opt to do it upon reboot. Test runs, says it's found an error with my hardware, contact the manufacturer.

So I ring Dell and say I'll take the replacement and explain the fault with the memory too.

Got a call today saying the only system they can replace it with has the following differences:

2.4Ghz instead of 2.5Ghz
500Gb instead of 320Gb (though mine should have had 480 in the first place) :) /
Red instead of blue

What should I do?

Cheers.

Is the 500gb a 5400rpm? I wouldn't be accepting it if so.
I'd just ask for them to send a proper like for like replacement (or one of a higher spec) or take a refund. They''ll probably mess you around for far longer than it's worth.

Id ask for a full refund, it may put pressure on them to find a like for like one for you or better. Is the 2.4 still a penyrn chip?

Not sure, doesn't say on the spec.

Thing is, it's from the outlet, and if I ask for a full refund they'll do just that. They already offered me one.

What I really want is to get a replacement system, the best spec I can.... but I've not seen one on the site yet that fits the bill.

Do you still get a full warranty with it? If you really want that one, can you not keep it for a week or two then go down the road of logging a fault with dell and get them to fix it?

I also had the bsod with memory problems on mine, since reinstalling vista i've not had the problem.

Here we are!

I kicked and screamed and they've offered me this:

Euro Ship Accessories Euro Power Cord
Memory 4096MB (2x2048) 800MHz DDR2
DUAL SLI 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX card
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Hard Drive 200GB (7200rpm) FFS
Hard Drive 200 gb (7200rpm) FFS
Intel 4965WLAN Mini-Card EUR
Crimson Red
MS Vista Premium Logo Label NB (small
17WU LCD
European Dell TrueMobile 355 Bluetooth
Primary 9-cell 85WHr Li-Ion Battery
Uk/Irish Internal Keyboard (QWERTY)
754-10789 - 1 Yr XPS Premium Support
XPS M1730 CORE 2 Extreme X9000 (2.80GHz)
English Genuine Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium
Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium

So it is:

2.8Ghz Extreme, not 2.5
SLI 8800, not 8700
400Gb, not 320Gb
Red not Blue :(

Am I right in thinking I should yank their collective arm off on this one?

EDIT: Holy **** that's £2,650 new!!! I paid less than a grand for the broken one!!! I think I'll take this and put it on fleabay!

Why fleabay it? If it`s better than you wanted, why not keep and enjoy the super kit that you got on the cheap.

I had a similar thing once. I bought an XPS desktop that had a problem. After a few heated discussions with Dell (due to the nature of the problem), I ended up with an £1800 machine I paid only half that for. I kept it and enjoyed .

All I need is a machine good enough to do my video editing on (render times don't matter, but being able to smoothly play HD does), I don't play games or anything.

Free money would be good!
