Today I got to experience the prestigious Sennheiser Orpheus
Price on the setup can cost 30,000-100,000 depending on how desperate someone is to get one.
This was an experience! because I'll never get to demo them ever again especially in perfectly quiet conditions in London.
The build of the actual headphones is good, think Senn 650 with more metal and wooden parts. They had nice luxury leather headband and pads with a soft part on the front of the pads.
The ambassadors with a massive jack director being electrostatic. The huge tube amp was amazing, it's huge very. Sexy looking! The whole combo looks retro and is really a thing of beauty.
So how does a 30,000+ Headphone and amp combo sound?
Well I've literally experienced nearly every headphone that you can get easy access too apart from some odd ones here and there and the Stax and other electrostats and my impressions are.....
They sound different. They sound like a less intimate and more spacious H650.
Treble was smooth, the combo gives you a very warm, quite thick but spacious sound. You get a very hard to explain timbre but I can tell you they sound very nice.
Mids are between the HD800 and HD650 in thickness and detail. They give you a very relaxing midrange with good distance between instruments. They are not as lush as the 650 to my ears.
Bass was neutral, good body and we'll controlled. It doesn't have the extension of a good planar magnetic headphone but planars really specialize in bass extension and tightness.
Soundstage and separation was top notch. Not as spacious as the HD800 or flagship AKGs but very good between the 650 and AKG Q701.
They are a headphone you can leave on for hours, very polite sound signature. Due to the crazy price they force you to over analyse the music but I found myself getting so relaxed and falling into the music.
I compared them to the HD800, I found them more relaxing and easier to listen too. Much warmer and musical. The HD800 had a wider soundstage and better micro detail then the Orpheus. Overall the Orpheus is a nicer more engaging listen.
Do I think they are worth the money? Noo course not! The sound was on the same level as some of the heavy hitters HD800, LCD2, LCD2, HD650 even.
The price is high because it's like a piece of art at a museum.
I can tell you it was an excellent experience and I'm glad I've tried what many consider, the best headphone in the world.
