Today I got to experience the prestigious Sennheiser Orpheus

Price on the setup can cost 30,000-100,000 depending on how desperate someone is to get one.

This was an experience! because I'll never get to demo them ever again especially in perfectly quiet conditions in London.

The build of the actual headphones is good, think Senn 650 with more metal and wooden parts. They had nice luxury leather headband and pads with a soft part on the front of the pads.

The ambassadors with a massive jack director being electrostatic. The huge tube amp was amazing, it's huge very. Sexy looking! The whole combo looks retro and is really a thing of beauty.

So how does a 30,000+ Headphone and amp combo sound?

Well I've literally experienced nearly every headphone that you can get easy access too apart from some odd ones here and there and the Stax and other electrostats and my impressions are.....

They sound different. They sound like a less intimate and more spacious H650.

Treble was smooth, the combo gives you a very warm, quite thick but spacious sound. You get a very hard to explain timbre but I can tell you they sound very nice.

Mids are between the HD800 and HD650 in thickness and detail. They give you a very relaxing midrange with good distance between instruments. They are not as lush as the 650 to my ears.

Bass was neutral, good body and we'll controlled. It doesn't have the extension of a good planar magnetic headphone but planars really specialize in bass extension and tightness.

Soundstage and separation was top notch. Not as spacious as the HD800 or flagship AKGs but very good between the 650 and AKG Q701.

They are a headphone you can leave on for hours, very polite sound signature. Due to the crazy price they force you to over analyse the music but I found myself getting so relaxed and falling into the music.

I compared them to the HD800, I found them more relaxing and easier to listen too. Much warmer and musical. The HD800 had a wider soundstage and better micro detail then the Orpheus. Overall the Orpheus is a nicer more engaging listen.

Do I think they are worth the money? Noo course not! The sound was on the same level as some of the heavy hitters HD800, LCD2, LCD2, HD650 even.

The price is high because it's like a piece of art at a museum.

I can tell you it was an excellent experience and I'm glad I've tried what many consider, the best headphone in the world.

lord have mercy a £30K-£100K headphone setup?

i'll be honest I could have pretty much told you that they wouldn't of sounded much better than the right £1000 setup just slightly different.

brilliant to hear it first hand though than educated guesswork.

it's very much with everything high end though, your paying more for other qualities than how good they actually are at doing the job compared to mid end or more bang for your buck setups.

It's crazy how much these are worth. They are very good though and it was an amazing experience. Yeah if people are smart they can find their ideal setup for much less.

Hard to put a vaule on their sound as they are unique, but I'm happy with saying they are HD800 and friends level in terms of technical ability. The signature is my ideal sound but my £300 HD650 fill that role for much less.

The set I listened to were Sennheisers own set, they were insured for 30k. They go back to Germany on the 23rd of this month so I'm lucky I got to try them.

The second Orpheus review from London I've read in the last 12 hours and you both seem to agree on pretty much everything. Well done for keeping your feet on the ground, a lot of people would have been overcome with euphoria if presented with such a chance.

so basically a HD800 is on or around the same level as this £30K headphone?

it's amazing a company like sennheiser let you do this, sounds fantastic and the experience of a lifetime. did you have to pay anything or was this all free?

tbh I just wish I could come round to your house and demo your extensive collection lol

Atleast with the amp, etc. you feel like your getting something not run of the mill for your money.

Would love to have a listen and compare them to some of my cheaper stuff lol.

I didn't get them on a loan a local audio store did, sorry should have put that in my review. The guy there said he's got something special for me to demo. Sennheiser loaned the store the Orpheus for a short time. The guy took me down stairs where there's literally £100,000s worth of gear and basically told me listen as long as I want lol

Yeah the HD800 are on the same level. The price is mainly because the overall rarity and limited numbers in the world.

To be honest not getting caught up in the hype and presence was pretty easy. When demoing I put all of the hype aside to get a better idea of how they sound.

Can't say they are the best I've heard because I've found so many I enjoy but from a technical point they really are up there.

The HD800 are really hard to get immersed in. They are a technical masterpiece but don't have the body and emotion that I like. I think that the AKG K712 is better value and is more enjoyable without losing any emotion and warmth.

I prefer the LCD2 and 650 to the Orpheus and HD800.
