Depth of field

I found that it's really difficult to get a good DoF blur on compacts apart from macro modes or using the very longest end of the telephoto, due to the very short actual focal lengths of the lenses on compacts.
Holy thread revival, Batman!

But this thread links in very well in what I hope to find - a compact which will produce shallow DOF photos.

I already have a pro-sumer type camera (Fuji Finepix S5500, a real bargain as are its descendants), but even that's a bit bulky to carry around. In some ways I would like an SLR - but the only thing I really love about SLRs over your average compact is the possibility of shallow-DOF images and portraits - that's a lot of money to spend on just the one effect...

What I really want is a digital Leica M8, but they cost around 3 grand!!

Have been looking at the newly-released Canon Powershot G10 but I'm not really convinced by its f-stop range.

Anyone have any ideas or am I just wishing for the impossible?
