Derren Brown: Apocolypse

Managing to silence every single person who knows Steven or any of his family members would truly be the most remarkable magic trick anyone has ever achieved in today's information society.

Certainly more impressive than hypnotising a man and making him believe he's survivor of a meteor strike.

This took about 3 seconds to find:

I think it's far more likely that Derren trawled through hundreds of applicants to hand-pick someone that this would work on as opposed to convincing hundreds of people to keep a secret, risking Channel 4's reputation etc.

thats not the same kind og hypnosis..... thats the power of suggestion where ulimately the person still has free will to do what they want.

you want to swap smoking but you cant etc...

its totally different from duff stageshow crap thats been going on with stooges for hundreds of years if it were real they wouldnt have needed stooges

yea really..... if they are as gullible as some people in this thread it would be quite easy.

derren must love the people who grab the popcorn and turn there brain off for the duration.

you think if someone is just a crap actor people are going to know its real and they arent acting? the guy would be going around the same as anyone on set after derren has temporary "stopped the hypnotism" its all BS for gullible people

In what way is it 'totally different'? Hypnosis works on the power of suggestion regardless of whether it's in a therapeutic or stage setting.

Care to provide evidence that Derren Brown has ever used stooges?

So you believe that the most likely explanation is that it's a massive conspiracy involving hundreds of people who will just keep quiet out of the goodness of their hearts?

You say other people are gullible but the explanation you're providing obviously hasn't been thought through and is utterly ridiculous.

derren browns looks like suggestions? looks like total control...

clearly fake crap for the "show" if it was real why did they need to edit all the footage rather than have it running big brother style?

Total control in the same way that a stage hypnotist "makes" someone dance around like a chicken? It's still working off the power of suggestion.

Your arguments are incredibly weak; showing every minute of footage as opposed to showing the interesting, relevant parts wouldn't make it any more or less believable.

My opinion is that it's utterly pointless to debate for hours on end whether the stunt was fake or not. To me the real point of the program was to put yourself in his shoes at the end of the program when he is reunited with his family. If you felt anything in that moment towards how you value the things you already have then the show had meaning, whether the entire stunt was faked or not is irrelevant.

This is just getting ridiculous now.

Clearly fake because Channel 4 didn't drop their entire schedule and screen it 24 hours a day? Unreal.

I agree to an extent but the idea that it's fake just cheapens and devalues that message, and people claiming it's fake without any evidence or even good reasons deserve to be challenged, particularly when what they're claiming is even more far-fetched and implausible.

Next we'll be seeing arknor calling people who don't think the moon landings are a big conspiracy "gullible".

Well the warehouse that he was in had just as many cameras, all on show.

Steven doesn't behaviour as I would have expected in an end of the world scenario. He wasn't inquistive and showed little emotion. I would be ****** and jeffing, then getting tooled up to kick some zombie arse, only way to kill them is to cut off their heads.

But in the end, I think the trick is on us.

PS. I also would have killed the scottish guy, so I could take his van.

Firstly, he was clearly emotional. Secondly, these weren't zombies, they were people who had been infected with something; cutting off their heads would be murder. Not that there would be anything to do that with because as Derren said in his blog, anything that could even potentially be used as a weapon was removed, to prevent any weapons being used. Thirdly, Steven was handpicked for this because of his particular personality, so what you or I or anyone else would do in the same situation doesn't really matter.

Killing the scottish guy for his van would definitely be murder, I very much doubt Derren would've picked someone like you for this. :p

Derren Brown is simply filling the gap left by Jeremy Beadle, i.e. Game for a Laugh/Beadles About. That's all there is to this. Either everyone on is in on it *except* the candidate as JB did it, or the other way round, only DB + the candiate are in on it and the rest of the actors/crew/family/whatever think he really is repsonding normally to the situation.

My personal take on this is it is the former, and the story will go so far as the candiate eventually rumbles it, at which point DB will pop out like Jeremey Beadle, and somehow to convince him to carry on with the rest of the "story", advantageuos to have selected someone with at least an interest in TV work at that point. Money may be involved but I suspect it would simply be the guy agreeing to go along with it. No one else needs to know apart from the crew on duty at the time. DB then just has to try to keep a lid on it, as he seems to have successfully done so far with his shows. Of course DB could be extremely lucky and the candiate is SO stupid and gullible that the whole story will play out without him rumbling it, which is obviously what DB claims, but it is still just Beadles About.

The second scenario that only DB and the candiate is in on it would actually allow for much greater suspension of disbelief as the reactions of the other participants would be more "real", even though they know the whole thing is a setup, and the conspiracy would only ever be between DB and the candiate.

I am happy to admit I have hostility towards Derren Brown entirely because of the farce that was the lottery numbers prediction, and subsequent going through the motions second program, when he knew full well evryone and their brother had spotted the amateurish split screen camera trickery for the entire week before the second program. He still went through with his bullcrap shared thinking or whatever it was.

Bad inference, I am saying nothing of the sort. You getting so riled up about it is amusing.

I don't see where I'm getting riled up, to me it comes across that the Derren fans are getting wound up that the show is being questioned and Derren is being accused of being a bit of a fraud. Either that or they appear to be riled that they perhaps look a bit silly to everyone else that they believe it to be true that a guy can be made to drop to the floor asleep over the phone. Questioning the feasibility of such an act isn't being riled, it's being critical of something that doesn't seem at all logical. Judging by your signature thoguh I think I might be right to assume that you don't question logic and that you just have faith, because the man told you so, right?

Apply Occam's razor. Do you really believe a conspiracy involving hundreds of people and risking Channel 4's reputation is the most likely explanation? Did America fake the moon landings too?

Hmm, you come across as mistaken too. I certainly don't subscribe to silly conspiracy theories. To land on the moon seems much more logical to me than faking the entire thing, as although it was quite astonishing a feat, the practice doesn't appear all that illogical. The same would apply to the WTC bombings. The theory that the US government planned all that is a fanatical conspiracy theory that just doens't make sense. I'm quite familiar with the entire course of those events as we are educated as to our reasons for deploying to Afghanistan every year.

So if it appeases you then yes, instead of calling the theory that Apocalypse is a farce we can call it a "conspiracy theory", but not in the same fanatical vein that the moon landings were fake, that's just silly. Nice try though *thumbs up*. Until the logic that a man cannot be put to sleep over the phone, or by waving a magic wand on a bus can be disproven I'm still in the "OMG IT'S A CONSPIRACY!!!!11" group. You can link me to as many Derren Brown quotes as you like, he is hardly going to say anything to the contrary.

Funnily this conversation has switched from a group of people questioning the validity of the claims on the show to a group of people laughing at those who question it labelling them as "OMG CRAZY CONSPIRACY THEORISTS!!!111".

Tell me, do you still write to Santa? :)

I don't understand why everyone thinks Steves whole family would have to be in on it. Only Steve had to be in on it. "Be a good boy Steve and play along". Wow, that's difficult.

As said, the responsibility lies with those who claim it to be real. I can't just walk up to you and say "hey I can walk on water". You don't just say "ah ok cool", and herald me as having super powers. You'd require proof, the responsibility of which would lie with me. It wouldn't be right for me to turn round and say "aha, no my dear Zenf1, it is in fact your responsibility to disprove my claim", that's just moronic but for some reason appears to be the mind set of some people in this thread.

When Steven got the gig he had to sign a NDA, to not disclose the plot to anyone, even after the show.

Would Derren Brown risk getting sued by sending an innocent member of the public whom will no doubt have psychological implications afterwards. How is vetting going to mentally prepare you for a zombie attack.

Also the insurance company must have loved the unpredictable of sending an innocent person in.

I believe this was the second attempt at making this programme. The first time the protagonist simply sharpened the end of the first cleaning implement he found and rampaged through the zombies screaming 'Eat Mr. Pointy Mop M********rs!!!!

14 actors died before the production team managed to shoot him through the face.

Thing is though, what you're claiming is far more implausible and unlikely. We know that hypnosis is real and it's not unlikely that someone who has been handpicked as being highly suggestible could be hypnotised easily and quickly, whether over the phone or on the bus, especially if they had been primed for it beforehand.

Your claim that it's all a big conspiracy which would have to involve hundreds of people is actually the extravagent claim here, therefore holding the burden of proof. You obviously don't have much knowledge of hypnotism but if you did, you may not find it quite so "illogical". People said similar things about the moon landings at the time but just because they didn't understand it, didn't make it fake.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Steves whole family would have to be in on it. Only Steve had to be in on it. "Be a good boy Steve and play along". Wow, that's difficult.

So when his family's friends/colleagues ask about Steven and his family being on the show, they're just going to lie about it as a favour to Derren? Do you believe his family were actors too or do you think they were his actual family? As Craig R said, it truly would be a great trick if Derren could convince all these people to keep quiet.

I don't understand people saying there was no way he could arm himself.
There was plenty of things he could have used to bash someone's brains in.

I noticed that when Derren said to the coloured girl along the lines of "Everythings set"
He straight away responds with an action himself.

On the bus, he also itches near ear, I assume he's got a hidden ear piece like the girl.

Also, I don't understand the "100's of people in on the act" defence for it being real, given 100's of people are in on the act, as actors (The "Zombies", people on the bus, his parents knew about it etc and they're keeping quiet.)
So I don't get that point at all.

1. No there wasn't.

2. Racist.

3. I scratch my ears all the time and am not wearing an earpiece

4. People are claiming Steven is an actor. Hundreds of people must know Steven and his family and if they were actors would be able to "out" them to the press.
