A bit of both it would seem...

"I am often dishonest in my techniques, but always honest about my dishonesty. As I say in each show, 'I mix magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship'. I happily admit cheating, as it's all part of the game. I hope some of the fun for the viewer comes from not knowing what's real and what isn't."

Does hypnosis actually work? He does sections where he hypnotises someone and gets them to do random things - I find it hard to get my head around whether that actually can be done.

I think there is underlying Psychology in it, for example his hypnotism and where that man stole the tele, I believe that is genuine, but I do not believe his Roulette, Lottery and other alike tricks he has played.

true - well I think if anyone actually believed the lottery thing they might be a bit speshul tbh.....

He used to be a hypnotist and I guess does use it sometimes however a lot of what he does is basically regular magic tricks....

I do love how NLP loonies think he's some sort of master NLP practitioner - erm no he's basically a magician - the manipulation/psychology stuff is mostly used as misdirection to cover up his magic tricks...

Well in his book he does mention attending an NLP course with bandler.

I couldn't care less, he makes good TV and I especially recommend a trip to one of his live shows.

And unlike spiritual/church/mystics profiteers, at least he admits at the start of his shows it's all misdirection and trickery.

If casinos are secure enough to detect people using electronic equipment, how did he get in with a camera? And why did this casino seems to consist of nothing but one roulette table?

I really like Derren Brown, and have found his previous word fascinating and genuinely interesting. His book is also brilliant and informative and he is very open about his skepticism and the underhand techniques he uses. I didn't think much of this series of events however; nothing seems to be as well explained as usual and some of it smacks of being too unbelievable to be true.

It seems like everyone who's been to one of his live shows says it's amazing and loves it, so why does he put so much crap on TV? :s

It was an interesting programme, of course there was no way he was going to 'win', as publicly airing that his technique had had worked would have alerted the 'casino' to the fact subsequently

just to leave it a little open ended he 'got' the number next to the one he betted on - to let us think 'wow that was close' and thus can make you think that it was 'close' and indeed was more likely to be real - clever stuff thinking persons TV :)

Of course it is fake, but because he says "I am not a medium, I use other methods" etc doesn't mean that his methods are legit, they are just as bogus but it makes good tv
