Derren Brown - The System

Flip just watched that on 4OD, meant to see it when it was on but wow... That was entertainment, and quite hilarious too.. The polaroid thing was indeed very funny, but how expensive must that have been to make! Derren Brown is brilliant, especially filming for so long to get 10 heads in a row lol!

4od for me as well :) There's a load of other Derren Brown stuff on there, I'm quite looking forward to when "The Heist" has finished downloading.

It was very good, even tho I know what he's capable of, he still finds new ways of fooling people.

That's crazy filming for 9 hours solid, I bet the crew were pretty relieved once he finally done 10 in a row. :D

It probably didn't cost a huge amount to make thinking about it, compared to other programs like Top Gear, documentaries, etc.

I still find it funny though - those shows must pay for cars and flights and camera equipment etc. He must've made some sort of pitch to C4 asking for a load of money to compensate people losing at the bookies.

Just finished watching it on E4+1, that's why I'm still up. That guy is just plain freaky. Very good and watchable, but just too damn freaky.

Got around to watching this last night, knid of spoiled it a bit when I worked out 'the system' within the first 30 seconds of the show :p

Sure I've seen a similar thing in the past where scammers send emails to huge numbers of people with tips then after a few rounds they've whittled it down to a much smaller number who are convinced it works. Then they offer to sell their 'system' for a few hundred quid. Obviously they catch a few mugs who shell out their cash to buy some crappy system which never works again.

I remember him doing a show in a boxing gym, where there was a skinny little lass in the middle, and loads of big butch men around the outside. Their challenge was to lift the women off the floor. The biggest guy there really struggled and managed maybe an inch off the floor. They were obviously really going for it as there were bruises left under her arms after it. Before they picked her up he got them in some state of mind and kept telling them to 'wait'. Wether that has any link with 'weight' i'll never know :p

the psychological bit is pure misdirection - that trick is quite a simple one and relies purely on physics

a few people have mentioned it already on here - derren brown is a magician - the whole manipulation/mind control thing is part of the act - he is quite honest about this too tbh.. and fully admits that everything you see isn't necessarily as it seems

So hang on. Are you telling me that a strong man (who is obviously normally, capable of lifting up the woman), not being able to lift a woman is down to Physics? Can you explain this?

Thought it was extremely boring. Figured it out after about 5 minutes in..

He tried to make it seem amazing and seems to take great delight in leading people along and then apparently taking the blinkers off their eyes and showing them the REAL TRUTH lol..... ego-maniac imo.

You know what this program was a lot like The Prestige. In the latter it pretends to have this amazing trick but you already figure it out 20 minutes in.... but because the build-up is so huge you cant believe the damp squib of an ending..... vastly vastly overrated film much like Mr Brown..

actually i'll give him credit for at least talking about it and making more people aware of it Because the "trick" is about exploitation: psychological and social and economical. Why do you think so many people play the "Lottery" despite the astronomical odds of winning big.......

We are a herd of sheep that are sooooo easily duped by corporations.....

This got repeated tonight and I watched it

One thing I know from experience is do not trust channel 4 programmes, but having said that Darren Brown isn't exactly someone that is surrounded by trust in the first place. He reminds me of some kind of rat..

If this film has been shot truthfully (highly unlikey) then the end races have about as much chance of winning in her favour as all the others that got eliminated earlier on. This is no system and is still totally by chance. A load of poo really and can't believe this has been made into a programme.. see her reaction when this woman thought she lost £4,000 that she apparently had to scrape together by a loan and borrowing from her dad? It was like she just lost on a £1 scratch card.. terrible fake programme in every sense!

Whilst The System wasn't particularly great, anyone who doubts Derren Brown needs to go and see him live. His latest show which is on at the moment is absolutely amazing.

That's the whole point and he explained exactly that at the end

She knew she was being filmed for television + she must have been pretty sure that the show would cover her losses anyway. Either way she still did a pretty good impression of someone in shock.

:D But, just plain strange to build a whole show around it.. I guess I was let down and feel cheated! Was hoping to be rolling in the money today ;)

The only way to win is to know who is going to lose.

A short story, a few years back I was managing a bookies in Brighton. This guy who lived locally started winning well above average. He had maybe 3 or 4 bets a week but was always surrounded by guys who used to disperse after he received a phone call. (They were hitting bookies around Brighton)

All his bets were placed as the runners were entering the stalls.

He was eventually picked up by the horse racing version of the police.

It transpired that he was getting info from trainers/jockeys in selected races (usually 5 or less runners) as to who wasn't going to win.

He is now barred from every bookie and racecourse in the country.

It was estimated he 'won' approx £500,000 in six months.

dont like this program, its so blatently fake that it just annoys me.

there was an episode i watched with a woman trying to not press a button that kills a cat, if she didnt press it she won a decent amount of money, and there was a timer of a few minutes. all she had to do was sit there for 5 minutes and not do anything. but oh wait she presses the button on 1 second to go, yeah, thats so real.

never watched it since that because its all blatently fake, therefor boring.

only 16K, they had her 4K and it was a 5-horse race.

But that's slim pickings anyway if they offered to refund all of the 7775 losers the money they lost.

If you'd paid attention he said the first 7000 lot were told not to bet. Over half were scrapped when they lost and the next lot bet £1, half were scrapped, the next lot bet £2 etc. Its not too much to refund people, with the amount of people tuning in, they can charge more for adverts at that time and get more than enough money to cover the show.

Whats fake about it? Brown is a master of NLP and other forms of mind control, you should read up on it, its basically the same sort of thing that pick up artists use to make women do what they want.
