Couple of years ago I saw a desktop air conditioning unit on sale. Anyone know anything like this or anything that would work better than a fan and preferably be silent too?

silent,cool and desktop three things you won't find in one product.

Air flow through the property is your best bet, you need windows open front and back upstairs and downsairs and doors open too.

You can get small air conditioning units that are basically fans with a built in refridgerator unit in them, you have to top them up with water though. They are not quiet though but not awful noise wise. IIRC they were about £80

That's just an evaporation cooler though, great for hot dry countries... not so great for the UK.

The trouble with air conditioners is that you need to vent the hot air outside for it to be effective otherwise it's just a very energy inefficient fan.
trailing a vent from your desktop doesn't sound like something you'd end up with in a commercial product...

Another problem is if you live in a hard water area.
Eventually it completely gunks up the unit with scale no matter what you try to do to prevent it.
