I currently have an I5-750 @3.6ghz overclocked bundle I purchased from here just over 6 years ago. I would like to build a new pc, going to use my old one for the wife or daughter, whoever annoys me the least lol.

I have been out the loop for a little while so am unsure of a few things. Due to space restrictions, sort of, a desktop case would fit in best in my room. I have a lian-li pc-c60b htpc case I use for a media pc and think this might be a decent case to use for a desktop build, although it will limit the cooler a tad. In the media pc I have an I5-4570s and an alpenfohn panorama cooler which works great.

I am leaning on the side of an I7 build as I don't game at all on my pc, although the daughter plays mine craft, that sort of thing, nothing too stressful. I am more likely to be encoding, photo editing and going to try and get into video editing. I am heading more towards an I7 as I don't know how much of an improvement the I5s would be over my current cpu and longevity, as it will probably be a fair while before I upgrade again, hence 6 years since I last upgraded!

I am looking to spend £800ish, I have just purchased a Dell u2715h, so don't need monitor or keyboard/mouse and will sort out an o/s separately. I don't want to overclock, would prefer just using at stock and would be interested on people's thoughts on running an I7 in a desktop style case. Would prefer the system to be quiet as well. I don't ask for much lol

I probably don't need a GPU, as long as I an output 2560x1440 @ 60hz over hdmi or displayport.

Thanks for the build details, some ideas I hadn't considered there. I think I would need a desktop style case, though, I need to rearrange my desk and may have to put my printer on top of the pc. I suppose I could use a tower case on its side, but I think I would prefer a case designed to work the 'right' way, but I may just be fussy lol

Cheers for the reply.

Ok, so this is the build that I am thinking of -

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £832.55
(includes shipping: £11.70)

I have the Lian-Li case for my htpc and I quite like it's features, especially the 2 x 140mm fans. I have picked the above psu, as I measured my existing psu in the case and it's approx. 155mm long and just fits in with a few mm to clear and the evga is 150mm according to the specs . I currently have 250gb ssd and still have over 100gb free on it still, so I don't think I need a bigger ssd at the moment and I will add another couple of storage hdd when I have decided what I need.

I think the noctua cooler above should fit ok, the max cooler height is 140mm. Does anyone have any other suggestions to fit in that case?

Still undecided about a discrete GPU, as stated previously I am not gaming, but the kids do use it for playing minecraft, roboblox, that kind of thing, so not sure if they would benefit from something more than integrated graphics?

Am I making any glaring mistakes, would any other combinations/choices be better?

Cheers.

Just looking at the cashbook offers, would I be better getting an I7 5820/motherboard combo? Would it be better suited to my uses or would I be struggling to cool it in that lian-li case?
