Okay.. So i'm going home for christmas.. for like 3 weeks.

I really want my desktop computer with me. Can't imagine almost a month on my laptop.

Given that I remove the hard drive and take it into hand luggage, and pack the computer really well (I have a hard-case suitcase that would fit it fine), shouldn't it be fine?

I know you "shouldn't" pack valuables into checked baggage and there's a lot of horror stories out there, but i've flown all across the world, including the middle east, and never had any problems with luggage.

Would you even trust your computer in an airport with the way the handlers just chuck things around?

Well.. They do that for mail too.. And people don't seem to have an issue with sending whatever in the mail.
I'd think it'd be easier to pack a computer safely for a flight than for sending it in the mail, given a hard-case suitcase and plenty of clothes that I need to take with me anyway :P
