Desktop icons - moving them closer together?

I want to move my icons around a bit but i have noticed it is quite limited as to how precise i can be, if that makes sense?

I can't move them around too much and instead they only 'slot' into specific places.

Can this be solved?

I'm sure there's a setting somewhere that sets the distance between the icons, as I believe I've seen it in the past.

Can't remember right at the moment, what version of windows you using?

Right Click > View > Untick "Align icons to grid"

No - and I'm kinda wondering why you'd want to turn that option off, it keeps your desktop tidy!
