Is it possible to remove the file name from underneath the icon?

as far as i know, no, but you can always google it, might be some nifty program somewhere.

Right click->rename
Hold alt and type 0160 on your numpad
Hit enter.

indeed - although removing the recycle bin name is a lot harder

I've hidden my recycle bin icon entirely.
I have no icons on my desktop and dont want any.

There's a reg hack you can do to get the option (a checkbox saying "hide Recycle bin on desktop") when you goto "folder options".

Im sure Google will find it.
