Desktop info

I have seen a few posts on here about mac desktops, a lot of them had information about their machine like CPU, memory, HDD etc, how do i go about getting this installed on my mac?

I'm going to guess you're referring to the iStat Pro widget. Press F4 and click the + sign. It should be in there.

System Profiler can you tell you this info as well.

i dont think its a widget, as it appears on the desktop all the time?

I know about this mate, but if you have a look at the "show me your desktop" thread you will see what i mean.

It looks to me as if it is embeded in the actual desktop

Widgets can be run on the desktop via a Terminal hack.

Or via some clever use of the Terminal & dashboard..

Just open up Terminal and type "defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES" (without the quotes). After you logout and log back in you can drag a widget from the Dashboard by pressing F12 while dragging. It should stay on your desktop full time, which comes in handy for that Midnight widget among other things.
