Desktop K8L chips won't show up until 2008? - According to DigiTimes' moles at Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, AMD will kick off its transition to 65nm process technology on the desktop with new Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 4200+, and 4600+ chips in the first quarter of 2007, and dual-core Semprons will follow later in the year. These sources suggest that desktop K8L chips won't show up until at least the beginning of 2008.

i'd normally suggest reading the whole article but the needed bit is in the first freaking paragraph, k8l cores for its NEXT generation AM3 platform won't be available till 2008. seeing as how am3 and ddr3 were never slated for before 2008 its not exactly news.

K8L has always been a high-end server/workstation part that AMD isn't going to sell cheaply until 2008. This isn't really news...

as i pointed out this story is saying am3 k8l parts won't be out till q108, k8l am2 WILL launch for desktop and server in 2007.

Before Q4'07 I'd say that is highly doubtful.

Well to be fair you've been saying/implying for quite a while that K8L was never going to come out on a desktop platform, fullstop.

There are so many rumours floating about i dunno whats going on now!
AMD better bring K8L out early in '07. As early as possible. Now that they are definately on track for production of 65nm chips this december, i can see it being much closer to the truth. Quad core K8L by 2H'07 lets hope :)

I wish we could have some official, non-leaked roadmaps. I might go for a cheap AM2 instead of Conroe if it were confirmed about K8L et al.

I've said all along that K8L will not be on the desktop on its launch day or anytime near it. I've never said K8L won't "ever" be on the desktop... that'd just be silly.

As always AMD and Intel will do the bare minimum to beat each other. So my guess is that AMD will place K8L onto the desktop a few months before Intel is ready with its Conroe-derived quad core chips with CSI. Server space a totally different matter - AMD will continue to do all it can to beat Intel! Every % of market share in the server space is massive profits for AMD and that is what they are focusing on.

Does anyone know what kind of prices these might command on the workstation/server market?

I'm currently running a Socket 940 Opteron system, so I'm happy to buy into workstation/server kit. I'll be looking to upgrade early next year, when my system will be 2 years old (and I've saved up enough for a complete overhaul)

If they're reasonable prices then I might build a system around these instead of AM2/Conroe
