Desktop load time

Running XP 64-bit

When i login the desktop background loads and the start menu but everything on my desktop takes ages to load, which is weird as i only have my computer and recycle bin on there. While I'm waiting for this to load, web pages wont open, i can't connect to my NAS and despite being able to navigate the start menu no program will run. Once the desktop loads everything i have clicked on will then load up in one go. I've been through the startup programs but can't see anything

Disconnect any network shares and see if the problem persists.

we have users at work with the same issue who travel between offices. some have 5 or 6 network drives mapped

The NAS is usually turned on about the time I'm logging in and takes about a min or two before it's accessable, wonder if the load times change if the NAS is already on.

Will test when I next restart

Restarted and no change, so I stopped a few non essential services running (mostly apple and sonic solution) restarted and it loaded instantly

The computer was never under any real load so it was a bit strange why it was taking so long. I assume the service was waiting for a response from something and then timing out before the desktop was loaded

I solved this prob with an ssd and W7
