hope this is ok going here :)

What mics do you people use for online gaming?

I'm looking into getting one but just got some new headphones so am wondering if a desktop mic is alright for gaming use ?

What would you suggest?

If this is better off in GH then feel free to move

I personally wouldn't use a mic for gaming unless it was attached to my head some way. Though I have not used my headset for online gaming for a while, I use the plantronics audio-90 headset.

thats the one i was looking at getting i thinks, glad to hear you have no probs with it altho i can see where DaveyD is coming from, a heatset would be better....

I used a labtec one I got years ago, nothing fancy cost about £17 iirc. I don't really use it that extensively though, mostly for doing commentaries and the occasionally bit of mm3.

I've never bothered with the headset thingys because I don't want to downgrade my headphones.

Why's that ?

A good sensitive mic and a good sound card, and you can hear yourself clearly from the other side of your desk, and you've got nothing in the way of your face

Depends what game it is. I always you ventrillo which is basically VOIP, I use the Razer barracuda HP1 headset, I have heard my self out of some ones speakers and the sound was really clear. Im using a XFI music, just having a bit of trouble with getting used to the headset. Had it for christmas and its a bit uncomfortable :(. But sound is great ;) :) :D.

One downside is that mics tend to pick up more outside noise. I have to be very careful where I put mine and what sensitivity I use otherwise it picks up the sound of fans/drives from my PC. Keyboard-clicking is another thing I've heard from some other people with mics.

I use one of those ancient microsoft desktop mics that used to come with all premade computers back in the 1990s. It's perfectly fine for BF2/2142, everybody can clearly hear what I'm saying. Only problem is it's a bit quiet because I sit quite far away from it.

I just perfer it. I've not used a decent desktop mic, but I like(d) to be able to move around and talk without worrying about trying to lean or speak up to a desktop mic. Personaly preference anyway.
