Desktop recording software?

Does anyone know of a decent program to make videos of desktop activity? I have adobe Captivate but I need the vid to be an .avi or .mov, captivate only seems to let me publish as a .swf?

All the ones i've tried apart from captivate have been either very resource hungry or poor quality/framerate issues

Any help much appreciated!

I used something called Camtasia a long while ago. Seemed OK. Not sure how it compares with Captivate though.

Camtasia is brilliant, its encoding is awesome as well.

but that is only for desktop recording, no good for games or anything

you can export as .mov .avi .swf .gif, auto generate an embedded player. lots of stuff

I used that one for a Uni assignment last year. I was amazed at how good it was considering its cost.
