Hi,
Has anyone got any suggestions of a good desktop remote control program that's reliable?
It doesn't need to be capable of going over the net, just to allow me to remote control from a common interface on my workstation from a manager like app that shows all clients that are available.
Ideally with a client app that's MSI deployable and invisible to the user.

I used to use NetSupport at my last job, but its a bit pricey for what it offers, and unfortunately LanView/UVNC doesn't work with 7 very well. :(

Considering Dameware and TeamViewer at the moment...any more suggestions?

Thanks in advance all. :)

We use TeamViewer (the Corporate package with 2x add-on channels) at work and it's superb. We used to have LogMeIn Rescue but that was not only expensive but complicated to get set up for the end user, with TeamViewer the pricing is competitive and and you have loads of remote control options; QuickSupport for one-off case, Host for unattended sessions and QuickJoin for presentations (if that's your type of thing) - the TeamViewer Manager is really good for keeping a list of your TeamViewer installs, it's a bit sparse on features but it does the job and they are adding to it all the time.

Oh and they allow incoming LAN connections too, really handy if someone on your local network wants support - you don't need to go outside of your network then back in again :)

Hope that helps

Edit: I just noticed the bit about having an MSI installer. It does have one of these for the TeamViewer Full package and you can pre-configure it however it's not invisible to the user, you can set a password to stop end users making configuration changes though.

Currently using Dameware v7 and happy with it. It's cheap and does the job.

Only other app I've used which was reasonably priced was GoverLAN.

We use Teamviewer on all of our customers servers for remote access to do programming work on them. The partner list is a nice little feature that lets you see who is and who isn't online at any particular point.

Not sure what we would do without it now.

I also use it at home to control my media server from my laptop.

Not used Dameware for a fair few years but it was top notch back in the day - fast, didn't cost much and could push the client out to machines without it.

Teamviewer is really good, we use it also, very simple but effective.

TightVNC 2. I use it whenever I notice some twonk has put an old UltraVNC on a Windows 7 laptop. It's fairly easy to script an auto-installer for it - just one registry key is required so that ctrl-alt-delete works. For remote unattended installs I use a simple batch file with psexec and a custom innosetup installer.

I use reverse VNC for laptop users who are off the network - it works very well.

Another +1 for teamviewer

Typically have it on all our servers and our clients, plus majority of their desktops now, also works well over low bandwidth connections (3G etc.)

I've used a variety of apps at work : Dameware, PCAnyware, VNC, UltraVNC, Windows Remote Desktop, TeamViewer and a few others.
on a day to day basis i use : ChrisControl :
http://code.google.com/p/chriscontrol/downloads/list (pushes the client out to the target machine).
Or a OneClick instance of either UltraVNC or TightVNC depending on the need at hand.
both do most of what i want, ChrisControl can be a bit flaky if the host is disconnect and computer restarted but generally works well for me.
As a pay product I'm very happy of Dameware myself when i used it, for the cost and licensing of it it seems a good deal to me.
As a Company though we seem to be deploying PCAnyWare as part of our Symantec deal, along with Altiris and Endpoint... PCAnyware was a good product i felt in the past and performed well generally but it was a bandwidth hog at the time. i haven't used its recent incarnations.
hope this helps a little..

Another vote for Team Viewer, we have it rolled out at one of our main customers and use the quick support most frequently its a money / life saver to say the least :) the fact it runs on nearly any device / os is also excellent too !!!

We use SCCMs Remote Control, it can be a bit slow sometimes but it's reliable. Failing that we fall back Windows Remote Assistance.
