I have been looking for a new laptop as a portable desktop replacement. I like the idea of a widescreen and a proper numeric keypad. I doubt I will be playing many games but you never know.. I will mostly be using video editing and drawing software. Its always nice to be able to have different things open at the same time without slowing down too.

I have been looking at the Acer 6930G but it seems to be filled with different components every time I see it and I don't know which are best. Unfortunately Overclockers's selection are a little out of my price range.

Requesting the advice of the experts :D

final desicion

ok I found this spec within my price range, it is the Acer Aspire 5536G-744G32Mn.

# Processor - AMD Turion RM mobile processor RM-74
# RAM - 4 GB (installed) 4 GB (max)
# Hard Drive - 320 GB
# Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
# Screen - 15.6 in
# Optical Drive - DVD Super Multi Dual Layer Writer
# Graphics - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570

Also I believe the windows vista is only 32bit. Does that make the 4gb ram redundant? I am not quite sure how it works. If I am using some video editing software doing a big render and I want to watch a video at the same time because I am bored of watching the progress bar, would vista 64 make any difference to smooth running from vista 32?

Got myself an Acer 7735Z to replace my desktop (Same reasons as yourself tbh) and its fine. Only let down tbh is the Intel M Graphics but apart from that its fine.

The detailed specifications of the Acer Aspire 7735Z laptop are:

  • 17.3-Inch HD+ Acer CineCrystal™ LED-Backlit Display (16:9 Aspect Ratio)
  • Intel® Pentium® T4200 Processor (2.0GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
  • 4GB DDR3 1066MHz Memory
  • Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
  • 320GB SATA Hard Drive
  • 8X DVD-Super Multi Double-Layer Drive
  • Acer PowerSmart Technology/Key
  • Multi-Gesture Touchpad
  • 802.11b/g/Draft-N Wi-Fi CERTIFIED®
Only £499.00 too

The 32-bit Vista can handle a max of 4GB of memory, but that includes all types of memory. So the 512MB dedicated memory for the graphics will result in 512MB system RAM not being usable bring it down to 3.5GB RAM. Combined with other system resources it may drop further, but should remain above 3GB RAM.

i got the 5536G

Thanks for that info Bane, Moogleys you beat what I paid by £100!....git.

I have yet another question. Upon recieving my new laptop I find myself very dissapointed at the amount of utter annoyance that is pre installed with it. I have had this problem with HP and Sony in the past which is why I avoided those brands but it seems the problem may be unavoidable. I spent about half an hour last night going through add/remove programs and I am still not finished, plus I am guessing there will be plenty of stuff left lying about that I miss so I was wondering if anyone had any laptop formatting advice.

I would like to format with a windows disk rather than a recovery disk (as that would just refresh the problem). Is it legal for me to use a naughty vista .iso from the internet to make a disk considering that the laptop comes with the operating system pre-installed anyway? Are there any unforseen issues with laptop formatting? I have not done it before.

I think I have found a website with all of my laptop component drivers individually listed and available for download... I think.

The OEM key on your shiny new laptop will probably not work with any old Vista disc, naughty or otherwise.

Otherwise the format and reload on a laptop is pretty much the same as any PC.

Why not try the Windows 7 RC? This is free to use until around March.

I had the same annoyance with bloatware on a Dell 4 years ago, they are not getting any better are they?
