Hi I have been tasked with buying a new laptop(desktop replacement) on boxing day for my Uncle and his family. His kids already have a PS3 for gaming.

Hoping to get an Intel I5 processor budget permitting or an I3 will do just fine.

1) What is your budget?

£300 to £500. Boxing day shopping might through us some massive discount !!

2) What size notebook would you prefer?

d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.

England/UK.

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

a. Like: Lenovo,Dell,Asus
b. Dislike:Packard Bell/ Acer

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
No.

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

Internet browsing, word processing, some gaming (note: PS3 user)

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

Highly unlikely.

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?

I think one of the kids likes to play some internet games which involve some graphics card action. But I think a HD3000 would suffice.

9) How many hours of battery life do you need?

2 hours minimum. But it is a desktop replacement after all !!

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

Online will do. We will also hit PCWorld and Sony showrooms.

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

Windows 7.

Screen Specifics

12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Everyone is different. Some like really small text, while others like their text big and easy to read. Click here for Screen resolution information.

If it's a 17 inch laptop then 1600x900 will be alright.
If it's a 15.6 or 16 in one then I think they will manage with 1366x768.

13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?

Doesn't matter.

Build Quality and Design

Hopefully something which will survive for the next 4-5 years. Their desktop is nearly 8 years, ancient.

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

Ladies in the family may not want something fugly :p

15) When are you buying this laptop?

Boxing day,in 6 days time !!!

16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
4 to 5 years at minimum.

Notebook Components

17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

250gb minimum

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
DVD burner
==========
Will probably upgrade the memory on my own but a 4gb machine should do alright in my opinion. My concern is whether an i5 2430m is worth the extra cashover an i3 2330m .

Check out the latest new dell XPS L702 deals. This comes in at £570 after discounts and cashback.

I doubt you will get a better value option on the highstreet or online.

Intel Core i5 2430M 2.40GHz
Windows 7 Home Premium
17.3in HD+ WLED (1600X900)
4096MB
750GB

1GB Nvidia Geforce GT 550M

Want to spend less then the best all-rounder 17" at the moment has to be the Lenovo Idea Pad @ £469.99. Not on the highstreet though but a very reputable re-seller.

Well Scrutinize, in my eyes these two are the best VFM notebooks at the moment. Also the fact that they are 17inch makes it to be on top my list. The only major differentiating factor is the processor. Dell one has an i5 and the Lenovo has an i3. I am hoping that on boxing day the Lenovo with an i5 will have its price cut by another 10 to 20 %.

That lenovo is already discounted pretty heavily so it may drop a few ££ or it may go up.

The dell has a much more powerful graphics and processor but you are paying well over £100 more and reliant on the 8% top cashback.

Prices on these change all the time, the other week with discount codes I specced up a L702 with GT550 graphics and an i3 for under £500.

I would still take the lenovo every time.

Hmmm that is round 1 to the Lenovo then. Will need to show some photos of both laptops to the family and see their reaction. I am sure they would never make heads or tails about the specs. I am fairly sure that the Lenovo will come on top there. Will keep you posted.

I have just noticed that one of the online retailers is selling a Dell inspiron 17r with an i3 2310m but still the Lenovo G770 beats it as it has 2330m and an dedicated graphics card whereas the Dell only has Intel HD3000.
