It can be done, you will need a twisted pair cable, you will also need to make both computers part of the same workgroup and ip range, to use the internet on both computers you will need to enable internet connection sharing on both machines.

You'll need a cross-over cable, not a standard ethernet cable.

ICS need only be configured on the machine connected directly to the net (assuming it's using a USB modem). Other machines need to be configured to use your internet machine as a gateway.
Once ICS is setup on your internet machine, Windows will allow you to create a floppy to populate this info onto your other machines. This when loaded onto your other machines, provides details of how to connect to the internet through the ICS machine.

Hope this helps.

It doesn't even need to be that hard.

Enable ICS, and hook up the other machine. It should get its settings automatically over DHCP, and everything will work from there.

whats all that mean? can you explain that in simple terms? when i hook the desktop up to the laptop it say there is little or no connection, how do i fix this? or do i have to create a new network or what?

cheers

You need to enable ICS on the PC with the internet connection you are trying to share.

Have a read of this:
