Hey i just got a dell inspiron 3847, its currently got the following.
Intel i5 4460 3.2G
8gb ddr3
Nvidia Geforce GT 705
Dell Wireless N 1705 2.5G

What upgrades can i perform to this PC e.g, add blue ray drive to extra slot, add more memory, add an additional hdd or sdd, change the graphics card for a better one also the psu, also looking at replacing the wireless card for a 5G wireless ac one if poss, can anyone advise on this please

Hi,

What do you use the rig for? Is it struggling in anything particular.

In general terms some of the 'ideas' you have are a waste of money. Blu-ray is ONLY needed if you watching a lot of blu-rays and don't have a blu-ray player..

You don't need more than 8Gb of memory (unless doing heavy photo/videoediting).

An SSD may be a good upgrade but you'd have to install windows onto that (not sure how you could with that system)...

As for the GPU, if you are gaming, Yes upgrade it. Its really poor (gaming wise). What PSU does it currently have? I guess you'd require a new one anyway, that case accepts ATX PSU's right?

No need for a 'better' wireless card if its working fine already..

What kind of budget do you have for this?

I would agree with Doomspeed, depending on what you use your PC for would help.

a SSD is a improvement if its for general PC use or for gaming, i got a Samsung Evo 256GB drive for my PC and it makes windows itself run a lot smoother and programs load quicker but that would also depend on if your motherboard has sata 3 connections to use the read and write speeds to its full, mine does but they are not very good so my read is 415mb and write is only 250mb.

the GPU, if you are planning on playing demanding games will need updating, games that don't require high graphics or older games maybe fine on it with turning down some settings but also the PSU will determine what card you can upgrade too if you go down this route

Just like others said: gaming? Upgrade GPU, together with PSU as I suppose your current one is not strong. Not gaming? Then don't upgrade GPU but think about other pieces like SSD.

But most important:
8GB of RAM is more than enough. SSD would be my very first recommendation. Overclockers has very wide range of these, but personally I'd go for at least 240GB or 2x120GB so you have one for more of important software like OS, Microsoft Office, some photo editors (or whatever you use) and lets say left over 100GB for things that you use commonly but are not as important, like some casual games or music player.

No need of bluray drive, unless you own some movies on such type of disc.

And budget: tell us your planned amount of cash you want to spend for upgrades, and in what way you want this PC to be used.
