I dont use computer for watching films.

Computer is used for playing games and general desktop use, web browsing, word processing, emails etc.

Do I go for a 19" widescreen or standard?

Thanks for any advice.

Web browsing and word processing might be slightly annoying on a 19" WS as you lose a lot of height (from a 17"), although a 20" ws would be a lot better.

When I was buying I never considered a 19" WS because its too restrictive for general use (with the native res) imo. 20" is a different matter tho, I quite like it. Strikes a nice balance for both gaming and general/apps usage.

If I was forced to get a 19" tft it would have been either 5:4 or a 4:3 aspect.

widescreen, you don't notice the loss in height at all.

You realy don't, and I think it's actualy better for general web browsing than my standard 17" was, and gaming is brilliant.
Im running the Hanns HW191D, there is a huge thread on here about it, should read up.

Do any 19" WS have the ability to rotate to portrait?
Every Dell I've used in the past 5 years can. I used to run the 1905FP at my workstation in portrait when doing lots of text work because it more closely resembled a piece of paper.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but isn't this widescreen or not subject beaten to death many times? Somehow it tends to get monotonously re-beaten again and again and again :D Gimpymoo, my advice is 20" WS instead.

but we like beating things with sticks...

Just ordered the hyundai 19" ws to replace my 17" iiyama (didn't want to fork out for a 20") - I think widescreens the way to go

Gotta agree about 20" WS rather than 19". Then you get the same vertical resolution (slightly more actually) as a 17" or 19" 5:4 screen. You can get 20" WS for around £215 btw, like the LG L204WT.
