Hey lads i hope everyone had a brilliant xmas and is gong to have a good new year!!

ive recently got myself a new intel core2quad qx6700 extreme.

i bought it specifically because it was really cheap and a good overclocker and ive always wanted an extreme processor.

ive been overclocking this chip for the last 3 days and i just cant get a stable system to complete a prime95 test. the longest i ever got before a bsod on prime95 was test 6.

here are some of the results i came to that were kind of stable but wud fail in prime95

as its an asus maximus formula 2 its got loadsa settings. ive not changed all of them obviously

my fsb is 345 x 10x

CPU VCORE-1.33750
PLL V-1.53975
FSB TERMINATION/VTT- 1.31200
DRAM V- 1.86625

THIS CRASHED AT TEST 6 AND BSOD ON PRIME95

i then did a lot of reading then came to this point

CPU VCORE- 1.33750
FSB/VTT- 1.39150
NORTH BRIDGE CORE V- 1.41800

THIS LASTED FOR ABOUT 5MINS THEN BSOD'D ON ME :(

this is really stressing me out and i really wanted thid cpu to work well i feel really disappointed lol

any help will be greatly appreciated

kind regards

really??

at one time i did have a memmory problem and got the dimms replaced.

i shall test them on a stock setting using memtest??

that a good idea?

more vcore? unfortunately the qx6700 was never really a good clocker iirc, as it was not on the G0 stepping like the q6600/q6700, so maybe 3.4ghz is simply above its limit, although tbh i think you should be able to reach 3.6

i also ran prime95 on stock settings and it ran fine. i had already done that just did it again to make sure.

anyone got any ideas?? or what settings i should try?
:(:(

hey lads a few questions.....

apart from the vcore what else is contributes to the cpu temps?
also in core temp the tjmax is 85c and my cpu hits 80 really quick wud i get a bsod at that point? like to prevent damge to the chip so it shuts itself down to protect itself?

hey lads i think ive finally got it stable.

one prob on idle my cpu is at like 37c as soon as prime95 starts stressing the cpu the temp shoots to 60 then climbs to 80c

i was thinkins about the corsair h50 all in one cooling kit to keep my system cool

Ive just swapped out my old QX6700 for a Q9550. Basically its a good chip, runs very warm but is a good overclocker. In fact is so easy that all you need to do is move the multiplier up, thats all I had to do. At stock it runs at 266fsb on a 10 multi, all I did was move it to 266 on a 12 multi which gave me a very stable 3.2 or knock it on to 13 multi and that was 3.45ghz which was more of a challenge but in the end achievable. I set all my ram timings to unlinked so you can run your ram at its rated speeds and made sure I had good cooling for the cpu. The H50 is a good piece of kit. My prime temps never hit 80 degrees mind so deffo a new cooler me thinks.

how come you swapped for the other cpu?? brilliant advice mate!!

i cant change the multiplier on my board but i can change the fsb frequency. im on 3.5 with 10multi just cant get prime95 to run stable, either one core crashes or i get bsod :mad:

How come you cant change the multi?? Thats the joy of the extreme chips the multi is unlocked so you can go either up or down. The reason I swapped the chips over is because one I wanted the cooler 45nm chip and also someone mis posted on the great auction site and I got a q9550 a gigabyte mobo and 4gb ram for 83 quid, so obviously I went for the better chip and im selling mine on.

You guys are lucky, I'm stuck (well stuck ish) at 3GHz (Q6600 G0) with a dreeded Nvidia 680i chip set. Though some peeps say i did well to get it to 3GHz.

i dont know theres no option in the bois to set the multi. its the asus maximus formula 2 that ive got. i went throuhg all the settings and couldnt find anything about the multi??? or am i missing something or is it called something else on my board?

i found the setting to set the multi, on my board its called "ratio cmon setting"

so ive set it to 12 with an fsb of 291 which gave me 3.51...ish

i run prime 95 and i get a bsod almost straightaway, here are my settings..

VCC- 1.39375
PLL- 1.57950
VTT-1.40475
DRAM V- 1.83975
NB CORE- 1.56375
SB 1.5V CORE- 1.57950
SB 1.1V CORE- 1.15300

Any of these look strange to you or have any changes or suggestions?? am going to run the custompc benchmarks and see if that finishes.

if the voltages are too high could that also cause a problem??

im going to restart from scratch again any overclock again bit by bit with the higher multi and see if i can get it stable lol

Hello mate. Glad you found that multi option. First thing first. Try running the fsb at 266, that is stock for those chips, 266 x 4 = 1066 there rated speed. Then move the multi to 12 that will give you 3.2ghz. See if you are stable in prime with that first, if so and your temps arnt to bad move the multi to 13 that will give you 3.45ghz. I got mine stable at that speed but i needed to play with the settings a lot more like ram and voltages etc. Try to get 3.2 stable first before attempting anymore and watch the temps.

Also what speed are you running your ram at? And what type of ram do you have? I had my 1066 ram running at 900 ish to get my clock stable at the 3.5ghz on the qx6700.

EDIT

My bad just seen you ram in your sig!!

Make sure in your bios options you set your ram to unlinked if you can. This means that you will be able to manually put in your rated speed for your ram, this again maybe an issue because as your upping your fsb you may also be overclocking your ram!!
