GTX 790 in February?

GeForce GTX 790?
Speaking of the new cards, we might soon welcome a new GeForce 700 graphics card. The GeForce GTX 790 is supposedly being prepared for February, so yes, this is going to be an interesting month. I heard it could feature 10GB memory (through 2x 320b interface) and 2x 2496 CUDAs. I could not verify this information, thus I decided not to make a separate post, but if these specs are even slightly true then I think you should know them.

Almost forgot, for those wondering where are 6GB 780 Tis, I think this has something to do with TITAN successor..

Not much to back it up but would be about right in timing.

It could happen, but I don't understand why.
It will just be to claim the fastest graphics card title again. But it will cost loads and maxwell is this year also.

Would be a strange one too if they went 2x5gb on it.

Only time will tell but I genuinely hope we have seen the last of 28nm.

Here you go Kappy, something else to sink your teeth into :D.

As far as the card goes though, why change a habit of a lifetime, Nvidia.

Dual GPU counterpart always comes along at the last knockings :). So wouldn't be at all surprised.

Although when a site uses the expression "I heard it could", it implies it's even less than a rumour lol. 10GB seems a stretch.

Also not sure what he means by this.

Charlie claims that NVIDIA will stick to 28nm process with the new architecture. He is basically saying there won’t be any 20nm GPUs from NVIDIA in 2014. I find this highly unlikely, it would deny all previous rumors and simply cause a huge disappointment.

Sad times if true.

320bit and 2496 CUDA cores is kinda disappointing, bit like the Asus MARS made out of 2 760s. Of course, you cannae break the laws of physics...

Well if that is to be believed it's unlikely to outperform or match two 780Tis. So the 690 would still hold it's crown as the best heat sandwich they've made to date :)

One thing is certain though, there are no 20nm GPUs in first and second quarter of 2014. First Maxwell samples were made few months ago, they are almost ready for mass production and they are all in 28nm fabrication process.

Doesn't make much sense to me, 20nm design kits were available to nVidia early on with Maxwell development and with no direct optical scale available in either direction and the amount of extra work to implement it on both processes I can't see them doing it unless things were really desperate. Unless they are gonna re-release Kepler for the first round with some minor tweaks/some cutdown features from Maxwell slapped in and call it Maxwell.

Could, maybe, may, if

January must be a poor month for news.

If NVidia are going to make a dual card based on the GK110 (I don't think they will) the easiest way to go is to use two full fat GK110 chips with low clocks, this will produce less heat than two highly clocked but trimmed down GK110 chips.

Hopefully they take their time with the 20nm Maxwell chips so they are a decent jump in performance from my 780.

The last thing I want is a 20nm chip turning up in Q3 with a 20% improvement over a clocked 780. Why? Because I'll probably still buy it.

Probably best to stay away from Maxwell and 20nm for the first 6 months or so until the problems and the market has settled down. I won't be going anywhere near until Xmas time.

Haha, you know that.

Haha, you know that.

I think 20% will be quite likely to start with but the real performance cards won't show up for 6 months or so.

I think the things to look for from the 20nm cards from launch could be bigger and better vram/buses even though @1080p it won't make much difference.

IF any of the current rumours are true then:

GTX780 type part delayed for 14nm in 2015 - significant performance improvements over current - easily 80% faster than the GTX Titan.

The GTX680 type part (early 2014 launch) is likely to be 20nm and about 40-50% (depending on final clock speeds) faster than the GTX Titan for traditional game rendering but a bit more for next gen compute shader, etc. heavy titles.

GTX670/660 type parts would be rebadged 28nm Kepler with a few tweaks - probably aimed at a balance of cost efficiency (to nVidia) and performance as its likely where a lot of nVidia's profits will come from this round.

I'll probably take Dicehunter's advice from the Maxwell thread and stick with my 780; possibly getting another cheap one (will have access to MM soon, probably) so that I can manage titles like The Witcher 3 this year. The 900 series is likely where I'll rejoin the upgrade chain :D
