Detecting visitor's country

Is there a free tool that I can integrate to my eCommerce site that can detect the visitor's country? I want to change the currency and show the relavant flag depending on where the visitor resides.

Is this a service I would have to subscribe to or is there something free I can integrate?

This maybe handy as well. Found it a few months ago, it seems to use the same maxmind database plus it includes a basic API.

Thanks for that.

I've already started integrating MaxMind service. The 27MB DAT file for city names seems to work very well. I thought the performance would be bad but it's actually very nippy.

I think the only real difference between the free version and the retail one is improved accuracy for the detecting the country of world wide ISP's like AOL, but who cares about that anyway

just include an options for people to pick the country themselfs also.

I do this on my site with a SQL database called IP2country. It works fairly well, but some ISPs, including AOL, seem to use proxies based elsewhere and these can give false results. I was using it to geotarget content to my website's users, but it can't really be relied on.
