I've just come back from walking my dog and I noticed an orange light in the sky, est. around 10,000ft with two solid red lights either side (not flashing, eg: strobe or navigation lights). I ran indoors to get the girlfriend to confirm the sighting then when the two of us stood outside freezing, 10 more followed the same path. Some were catching the others then slowing but all followed the same path.

Just to recap:

  • No noise
  • 11 orange lights
  • 2 smaller red lights either side
  • Following the same path
  • Adjustments in speed between spacing
  • Gentle curve then out to sea off the coast of Sussex
  • Once past overhead, lights vanished so lights were forward facing
  • Approx speed 200 knots
  • Strange path considering usual patterns
No alien crap please, these were craft in formation, illuminated non-standard and following a non-standard flight path so maybe MOD/Civvy and not commercial.

Any ideas?

Nobody here is going to know. I was going to suggest a formation of FRA FA20s but it's a Saturday and the Navy are in bed.

BTW, you cannot estimate height and speed based on lights alone. I'm willing to bet your estimations aren't even close.
I agree, it was just a wild guesstimation based on the clarity and size of the lights and it's movement. If the objects were the size of 20 Airbus A340's then the height would be estimated at about 100,000 and speed would be several thousands of MPH but since that's not very likely, the object size is clearly single aircraft size so this was my nearest guess. I also watch craft pouring into Gatwick overhead and usually just as they cross the roof of my house the landing lights come on, which I presume to be 10,000ft?! These lights and the speeds weren't dissimilar.

A cabbie mate I called also saw it from the town centre and he said they went out to sea but from their interpretation they were remote drones of some variety, very quiet/silent but all following a standard path.

Alien boys, if they were all seeing, all knowing aliens, why would they have directional lights? Orange is an unusual colour to illuminate with though.

I think its...

You're imagination.
That's why I got the girlfriend to confirm it. Otherwise, they'd have abducted me, done something to my eyeballs, erased my memory and placed me back where they started and I'd carry on home without writing this post ;)

Is there something particular about the FA20 that would replicate what we saw? I googled it and this bloomin thread comes up first.

I'm assuming you mean:
