Determination of maximum internet speed available, small village

Hey guys. Hopefully an easy problem to solve. I have a family friend who is annoyed by their internet connection speed, it's around 1mb and not particularly stable. I think the connection dropping is a result of the antique and dust filled router, so this I can probably solve.

However, how do I find out if it's possible to get a faster connection here? 8mb *if your line will do it* isn't that helpful if the fastest this place can cope with is 1mb. How do I find out what the line will do?

Cheers, and sorry for the vague terminology

if it is a small village don't expect too much, i manage to get 1.5-1.7 but any checks i run show as 512 .

If you put a decent router on the line and get the line stats at 1mbit it'll give you a reasonable Idea. It's not an exact science however.
In remote locations Cable kinda comes into it's own as it's not really affected by distance. IF cable is available that'll probably be the best option for them.

If they get 1meg on ADSL then ADSL2+ might give them a boost but likely only a few hundred kbit if that. ADSL technology just isn't designed for that kind of deployment i'm afraid.

We're in a village and quite a way out from the exchange. Typical connection for the last 12 months or so used to be 1700Kb/s, with quite a bit of disconnection.

I've just changed the router; the new one connects at 3300Kb/s and is much more stable. :D

Did you by chance use an ADSL test not an ADSL2+ one? It's not spot on but it's rarely THAT inaccurate.

well i'm guessing he used the checker linked to above which is bog standard adsl. and he's feeling the need to show off his LLU connection speed. it's just willy waving tbh. :p

Which make and model number please
I am in the same boat as the OP 3.3 miles from the exchange, cabinet in the next village over, strugle to get over 2 meg with dg834 gt with dgteam firmware, always on the lookout for a better router for my poor quality long line

Netgear DG834 (says v4 on the label) without any wireless, just running the firmware that it came with. Bought it from here.

Ahh i see mine is bettter then:D .Have got one of those too and is not as good as the gt.
Thax for the reply though:)

No, I'm pointing out that I would obviously (and did) receive the max adsl sync of 8MB while this test says my max should have only been 6.5 while on adsl. 1.5MB difference is still quite a bit imo. If I wanted to willy wave, I would have it in my sig along with my system stats.

It refers to the profile speed not the raw sync rate. It rates me at 5.5Mbit which is spot on for my profile and throughput. My actual sync rate was something like 7.2Mbit with some tweaking.

i'm sorry, you've lost me there.

BT reckons I should be able to get up to 6.5. I'm currently synced at 24.5.

no mention here of the 8mb sync when you were on your standard adsl serice at all? what purpose did your posting of your LLU sync speed serve in this thread?

I have the DG834G V4 and the DG834GT and with the DGTeam software loaded on both, I have found the DG834 V4 to be faster on average all the time. There has got to be differences in individual hardware samples as well as the timing (differing sync speeds) of disconnecting one and reconnecting the other though.
