Deterring foxes?

My mum keeps tortoises in her back garden, and has been having problems with foxes disturbing them in the night.

Now the problem is, we don't particularly want to deter cats or birds, just foxes.

I'm assuming there isn't a way to deter just foxes?

Are those ultrasonic repellant devices you can buy a) worthwhile and b) directional? If we could just cover the small, relevant area of the garden that would be fine.

Thanks for any advice!

Failing any of this, I think I'll just shoot one and shove the body on a wooden stake, that'll scare the little sods away ;)

Kill the foxes and hang their heads on a pike in your garden, the other foxes will learn not to mess with the tortoises.

I'm not sure if the sonic deterrents only target foxes, so may also affect cats. Shouldn't affect birds though.

Had you thought about a chemical solution? You could also try trapping and releasing, but there will undoubtedly other foxes.

What length is the garden? You should really be looking at .22 centrefire as a minimum fox calibre. The other issue with shooting it would be causing alarm to your neighbours, and if near a road, road users. I don't think shooting is a realistic option if it's in an urban environment.

hire a few toffs wearing red jackets on horses with packs of blood thirsty dogs, that will sort your fox problem out

Close range .22 rimfire would do a fox in with a headshot. Moderator on the rifle and your neighbours wouldn't hear a thing. Just make sure you're shooting against a backstop.

If you do decide .22 rimmy, remember they are prone to ricochet. I suppose if the range is short (under 30 yards) a 12g shotty with BB shot and a mod may be suitable :)

Always a winner:
