Going down a random Deus Ex related rabbit hole on the internet, I chanced upon the youtuber MKaelus' (now deleted) videos, which included:

Is this real and was in the game files all along?

Doing a google search I see no such mention, just a lot covering the fact it was a 'myth' and was due to memory constraints at the time.

Part of the background for Deus Ex involves "terrorists" blowing up and/or doing other high profile events involving notable landmarks (UNATCO is supposedly formed in response to this especially the terrorist strike on the Statue of Liberty) so nothing particularly prophetic as such if any of those landmarks were attacked in real life.

I can't actually remember if the Twin Towers were present in the original CD version of the game or not.

twin towers didn't seem all that common knowledge until they got destroyed, I doubt most people at the time of deus ex would notice them even if they were there.

When the world bites the dust, the scattered remnants of civilization will scour the Earth for an ancient relic once called 'The Dues Ex'

Some say it a myth, or the harbinger of doom. Others believe rumours of a holy grail that foretells the future and the secrets to saving mankind.

Is the franchise still shelved? Bloody Square Enix. They decided to be greedy and messed up with Mankind Divided and then shelved it when it did not sell as well as they expected.

There was some vague talk of a future project - I can't remember details but they had another game they were making first that they were going to use the engine of or something for a DX game.

Personally I'd love to see a DX game somewhat along the lines of The Division with a more persistent existence a bit more refined than say Neocron.

I don't want to see anything else than a SP game from Deus Ex, the facets that make it great are storyline, interweaving plots etc which work best in a curated way, albeit with a bit of an open-ended set of pathways.
I wonder if they could look at doing some sort of historical game loosely based around DX lore, maybe looking at the Illuminati in the 20th century. I realise this would compromise some of the DX essence (nanotech etc) but they could blend in a few knowing glances to it, very early prototypes, in jokes, early ideas for Daedolus etc.

Something in the style of TD can have both - TD has a curated storyline, etc. as well as a more open world approach.

If done carefully to make it convincing using prototypes kind of approach but not go too steampunk (though some elements would be cool) an earlier era could work well and push some of the focus onto rich story telling and some of the development progression including motivations and failures, etc. it would need some really good writers, etc. though to pull it off.

Did some investigating of an install and found this in a skybox texture file:

Looks like they initially went with having a more realistic NY skyline as shown in the video.

But in the end went for a semi-fictional skyline with the surrounding city appearing closer than in reality.

I suppose to give that closer / more detailed look to the rest of the buildings, they needed to drop the twin towers. Seems artistic license resulted in the game never having them, but indeed a vestigial texture remains in the game's files :p
