Device to record TV?

Hello,

Several years ago I had a DVD recorder which I used for a long time to record film/TV I wanted to keep that I had watched on TV.

Roll forward to today I wondered if there was a similar device that could encode to media files like mkv (preferred), mp4 or avi? I have a media server with all my DVDs ripped and I'd like to add to my collection.

I have several hard drives knocking about so have plenty of space, so any suggestions on a device would be great.

I'm not quite sure on your requirements here, but when I moved from Sky to Virgin I bought a Hauppauge 1498 HD PVR 2 to capture Sky HDD recordings to PC.
I had to playback manually on the Sky box and set recording manually on the PC.
