Game always crashes after playing the cutscene and loading the first level if I have 3D acceleration enabled. It works in software mode, but obviously looks a bit gash, and only supports up to 1280x1024x8 compared to 3D which would let me have 1680x1050x16 (if it worked).

So then, anyone got it working with 3D acceleration.

I never had any problems I have to say.

Er I realise that doesn't help much, but I got it running at 1680xwhatever the widescreen format is when I last played it.

Is there any actual difference between software mode and GPU mode on a game that old?

Yes there's a big difference. D3D gives you higher resolution with 16bit colour (in the case of this game at least), blinear filtering, effects like lens flare etc etc.

Having to drop to software is kinda like a triple-whammy, not only does it look worse but also you're limited to 8bit colour, then on top of that because it won't run in native resolution it is going to look disproportionately worse even allowing the for the fact that it is lower resolution to start with.

Tried all that and it actually made things worse, I can't even get into the menu now, it just crashes straight away :)

I've spent a good 1.5-2hrs or so over the past couple of days trying to get this working, I think it may be time to call it a day. A shame, but there's plenty more fish in the sea.

Ironically Dark Forces seems to run fine, but it's just a bit too dated for me.
