DFS-N Monitoring

Hi all

Does anyone know if you can monitor DFS-N failovers at all? Does it write to event log?

For instance, I have a namespace with 2 targets in it. Target 1 is set referral ordering to "First among all targets". Target 2 is set to "Last among all targets". In the event the first target is not available and DFS-N points my clients to Target 2 I would like to know about it, monitoring alert via event logs or something.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

If you are going to use DFS, use this tool to monitor it's health - it is the only DFS GUI tool I've been able to find. It is in Portuguese, but really good.

With DFS Targets failing over, or even the Replication failing completely - the only way you will know about this is from the event logs, under Applications and Services Logs --> DFS Replication

Also, the only way you'll be able to recover from a failed replication state is from the instructions contained within these logs.

Ideally you would have some sort of solution to alert you for specific event items showing up.

Let's separate DFS-R from DFS-N as I am only specifically interested in namespaces and not replication (I already have replication monitoring setup and working).

DFSRMon which I have used for a while now is indeed very good but only DFS-R centric, as far as I know?

Really, I am just looking for some event ID that says "namespace x failed over to secondary target". If it exists of course.

Ahh I see, apologies, I should read post more carefully. AFAIK there are no DFS-N event logs for your purpose. The Only way to tell maybe is if the DFS-R logs indicate a change in replication I suppose. If you just have the Namespace and no replication, there seems to be no way of telling.

I see nothing in the "DFSN-Server" logs when I know for certain that my namesspaces would have moved server (due to a reboot).
