DG834G unreachable

I have a Netgear DG834G router I wish to configure for an ADSL connection. The problem is, I can't connect to it. I've tried a factory reset, and the recovery utility from Netgear's site doesn't work. 192.168.0.1 doesn't work and the unit will not assign IPs to anything I plug into it, making it completely unreachable. I've tried all 4 ethernet ports to no avail. I know its switched on and the activity LEDs are lit for the power and ethernet. The "check" LED flashes orange briefly when I switch the router on and then goes out.

Any ideas?

Did you Do the `hard reset`with the paperclip for over a minute?
takes a lot longer than they tell you in the manual

Haven't got a paperclip handy. Will a pen do?
