DG834GT and wireless security

My 834GT seems to work fine but I had lots of problems over the weekend with wireless security.

I had it configured with no encryption but using a MAC address list. This worked fine, but I bought a Wii on Saturday and it would not work even with the MAC address of the Wii added to the list. The Wii could not connect. It seemed as if the router kept seeing it as a new device every time it tried to connect. In the router config page, the Wii kept appearing as a device I could add to the MAC access list, even though it was already in the list!

My next step was to turn off the MAC access list, but try and get some other kind of security working. I have an old laptop that only supports WEP, so I configured the router for WEP. But as soon as I turned on WEP, no device could connect to the router, including the Wii, a new Alu iMac, and my old laptop.

Has anyone got any ideas what's going on?

P.S. It's the straight DG834GT not the V3 or other variant.

Try updating the firmware (especially with the DGTeam custom firmware) - the newer ones probably improve wireless stability/functionality a lot.

I won't go into the usual "this protection is useless, use this" rant..I guess :p

Thanks dude, I have updated it to V1.02.14 which is the latest according to the web site.

I know what you mean about my choice of security not being great. Trouble is my old laptop only supports WEP which means everything has to be on WEP :(

I know MAC addresses can be spoofed but when 1/2 the other houses in the street are probably running open networks I thought it would be fine, except of course the Wii won't work with it, which doesn't seem right!

Maybe it's time to dig out the wacky router I got free from O2 BB and try that.

The speedtouch? The wireless on that is meant to be worse sadly :/

Do a search for DGTeam custom firmware. It's a lot better than the official stuff :)

Yeah I can't remember exactly what make it is, but it's black, boxy, big and a bit ugly.

I did give it a try but found it held a slower connection over ADSL than the Netgear. The custom firmware you mean for the o2 router right, not the Netgear?
