Hi there, I'm after a replacement router as the current Netgear DG834N has for the past couple of weeks been dropping the wired/wireless connection randomly and seems to be getting worse as the days go by.

Any of these stats look poor?

The main requirements for the one box are:

Modem
Wireless
Gigabit Ethernet

Anything else to check with the current setup before buying, it's running the latest Netgear firmware.

Cheers,

Neil.

If you aren't already using it flash it with the DG Team firmware - I'm using V1.02.16 - DGTeam Rev. 0848 on mine which I found most stable - the wireless was constantly timing out before I flashed it with that.

That said I ended up disabling the wireless on it and adding a stand alone wireless access point into my network as the DG834 was never great for wireless even after flashing.

Check it is the actual wireless dropping out tho, I've found my internet connection is dropping out a lot lately, and heard a few people with the DG834 having the same issue with random drops so I'm wondering if BT have applied some update to the equipment at the exchange in some places thats having issues with the chipsets commonly used in the DG834.

I've had a DG834N and it was never stable over wireless. I seem to remember that Netgear screwed up on the cooling of the wireless chipset in the unit which means it overheats if used to any great extent.

I have a separate wifeless access point now

I had one of these, it lasted for a few years and was a great servant to my needs. However it developed a fault (like most things do these days... (MADE IN CHINA!)) and I found that the problem was a little process called LDAP or something like that.

This router did not necessary overheat because like you it was lukewarm to the touch, but my experience with DG834 has convinced me to go back to Netgear because my current model - WAG160N - is a very poor product in comparison.

I might buy back into the DG series, but with N-Wireless specifications, or go for one their Premium/Business class products. As for your DG834, well if like mine the modem itself might still be fine but the wireless aspect may have run it's course and your log which is collected by the router might show an LDAP issue at the point where your disconnects occur.

Don't let that put you off Netgear though, because you really don't want to get stung by Linksys.

I used the DGN2000 found it to be a rock solid router, I had the DGteam firmware to tweak snr etc, much better than netgears firmware, still have it in my cupboard some where.

Well I changed the filter on the line to a spare I had lying about and *touches wood* hasn't tripped up yet.
The acid test will be first thing in the morning where it would fall over when I switch my computer on.

Rroff do you still have a link to download the 1.02.16 firmware by any chance? The link on the DGTeam website for the DG834N V1 section gives an error and the forums seem to be down or at least not accepting new registrations.

Can't find an alternative dl location anywhere.

EDIT: A bit of reading around seems to indicate that the forums are now invite only. I can't find a contact email to be able to inform them that the link for the DG834N V1 f/w is down. Don't suppose anyone has an invite code for their forums do they?

Overheating

Hi there,

I just joined to let you know your router is overheating.
If you google DG834N Overheating you will see many similar threads.
I have the same router and have soldered a 12v molex connector to the board and plugged a pc fan on to the case (after putting a 8cm hole in the case) to keep it cooler.

http://1337-d00d.livejournal.com/78212.html has a similar guide
Also here http://www.cheshil.com/tech1.php

Custom firmware will make no difference.
Hope this helps you solve your problems!
