** Diablo 2 Resurrected Thread **

Like others I'm remaining a tad cautious due to the debacle that was Warcraft 3 Reforged. However, I'm optimistic that they've learned from their mistakes and will give this game the love and attention it deserves, and going from the deep dive they did and what they showed off and talked about, I'm confident this will be way better.

Watched the Q&A this morning, really glad to see that they are going to support 21:9 resolutions (and resolutions scaling up to 4320p/8k) with uncapped frame rates.

They mentioned they are going to be using patch 1.14 (assuming "d" patch) to nail the classic experience and they didn't want to start balancing it out with something else. Just the way the Rob Gallerani answered that would be as if they will eventually make further balancing changes, and he acknowledged that some of the classes/specs were bugged as of the current 1.14d patch.

I think it'll be on the cards if the game does well, and they'll have a roadmap in place already for potential future patches, they'll just be hesitant to talk about it yet as you mention. If the game does well I could see them introducing future changes/content (hopefully at least! I'd love to see more).

Personally, I don't mind the cost as I know I'll easily get my money's worth out of it (which is just the same logic I apply to every game). The fact they're giving the game mod support also makes it an even easier choice for me, and likely others too as modding communities are massive, and I'm hoping it'll allow overhauls like Path of Diablo to flourish, which still gets 5k~ players online on each ladder reset and is quite astounding for what is essentially a mod of a 21~ year old game.

Not really, it's like saying you shouldn't have to pay for a 4k Blu-ray, because you bought a VHS version of the same film 20 years ago

That's a really good way to put it :)

I bought the Prime Evil collection that includes D3. I started playing the free version of D3 last week so when this came up I thought sod it, may as well buy both together.

I'm hoping for the original Diablo remake. I grew up abroad, my best mate and I spent lot of our free time translating it for our mates. He'd bring a floppy disk to school with text that he extracted from game files and I'd give him one back with translated text. :) Don't think we ever fully translated it but got most of the main story done.

That Prime Evil collection is a pretty good deal, especially if you've not played much/any Diablo 3 yet - should get plenty of play out of it! There's a good 4 to 6 weeks of Season 22 left also, so you could always check that out too when you've done the story. Diablo 1 remaster would be awesome, to be honest if they finish D2R I could imagine they could knock out a D1 remake pretty quickly, but unfortunately I doubt they would :(

Last Epoch, D2R, Diablo 2, and Path of Exile will all last quite a while (hopefully Diablo 4 also); as they are all good enough to have a share of the market. The only one that will really die a death more than it already has is Diablo 3, and most will move onto Diablo 4 or move to D2R (I didn't include Grim Dawn as it's not really in the same category, the same as games like Torchlight and Titan Quest, as they are more solo/co-op experiences). Last Epoch is definitely worth a look. It is still unpolished, but it's come a long way since it's alpha days. It lacks intuitiveness, and I still immensely dislike the UI, but it's definitely getting there.

I’m almost positive D4 will be around for sometime. D2R on the other hand will be much less, once the hype settles it’ll go back to what D2 is now due to the lack of end game. It’s not 2000 anymore and I don’t think it’ll hold onto players very long like it once did. Still one of my fav games ever though.

Maybe, maybe not; either way, I'd expect it to hold a respectable share of the market and for it to be around for a while, especially with the mod support it's receiving. Diablo 2 is still played quite a lot even considering it's age, which is a testament to how good the game is - if D2R did nothing other than replicate it then I can't see why it wouldn't be popular.

They said the same about Warcraft 3 Reforged also and that was "December 2019" or earlier and it came in late-Jan 2020 :p so I'll not hold my breath

They likely don't need mass-testing for that client (which is what beta is for). Alpha testing would basically to just make sure the game "works" with a larger sample size that the internal team can muster themselves, and all the major systems work.

its hands down a better game than 3 way in every way

Diablo 3 did quite a bit right, but equally as much wrong. It's definitely not worse than Diablo 2 in every day as each had their issues - Diablo 2 just had less of them.

I've only ever played D2/D3 on PC but I'm now a dirty console (PS5) gamer. How does Diablo play on console with a controller? Is it decent?
Diablo 3 played really well on PS4 when I had it, so I'd expect the same style of fluidity for D2R on a console. D2 played more "stiff" than D3 so it might not need the console-only roll ability they used in D3, but I wouldn't be surprised if they included something like it as it worked well.

Launch time tomorrow is 4 PM UK (5 PM CEST). Also, the pre-load up is on Battle.net now (30 GB ish). If anyone is looking for build guides on what to play there's some good guides at maxroll for all the classes.
