Richard A. Knaak, the author of The Sin War trilogy of Diablo books, participated in an IRC chat in which he spoke about Diablo and the upcoming thrid installment. He claims that he is not "writing for a dead world." Certainly not a hard confirmation, but good enough for the rumor mill :-) /thanks GR)
Q: Any information on Diablo 3? Have you been asked to write a further story?

A: What happens in the Sin War is significant, as I mentioned, toward the future. I know that Blizzard is very eager to make Diablo fans happy.

Q: How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game?

A: This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project...and I ain't writing for a dead game.

Q: So... Diablo 3?

A: I am not writing for a dead world...but a world with dead. Nuff said.

WoW really is your life isn't it?

Looking forward to D3, been a fan of the series for a long time. Can't wait to see what they've been doing all these years.

What could they do in Diablo 3 that isn't already in WoW?

Plenty.

That's a very sad view of gaming. There are plenty of concepts waiting to be figured out and designed. Why do you presume WOW is the masterpiece which cannot be succeeded?

Diablo III, whatever form it takes, is likely to happen. This bit of evidence I saw the other day, and does look optimistic. The books I intend to start reading soon.

If Diablo III should surface no one can at this moment say whether it'll be better than WOW, but to ask what can be achieved that's not being done in WOW is laughable.

Personally it wouldn't suprise me if it's better. I'd welcome the Diablo universe once more eagerly as a background for a start.

And I'm increasingly feeling myself wanting to part from WOW like a habit that I'm need to rid myself of because I feel I'm doing it from some bizarre neccessity rather than get actual pleasure from it.

Hmm, thought I edited that post... What I mean is, I loved Diablo & Diablo2 + Lord of Destruction, but I can't really see where they could take it now? Stick it in 3d and expand the characters and social side of it abit? What would that turn into?

What i'm getting at is that isn't WoW basically Diablo 3? (obviously its not, but do you see what I mean?)

Are you crazy?

I don't see what you mean. I've never even played Diablo and only started playing WoW yesterday and I can already see the blinding differences between the two.

Never played Diablo? Damn, quit WOW and play those games first.

They'll consume far less of your life and you'll feel more satisfied. Seriously.

How can you you see blinding differences if you have never played one of them? And i'm not saying they are identical, but if you took Diablo (10 years old or so) and expanded upon in the way they do in new games, what exactly (story & setting apart) could you see them doing that would be radically different from WoW?

having always been too afriad to play wow, i can say i'm really looking forward to D3, i bought 2 as a recomendation from a friend, and its a cool game indeed :)

too afraid you may ask? -yes, many people said it took over their lives!

Honestly, probably not a great deal. The only things which change now are the game's mechanics - skills, classes (occasionally lol), physics and stuff like that. Deep-down gameplay is very hard to reinvent. Games which do have flair in terms of gameplay tend to fail as they are seen to be gimmicky.

And I realised the other day that I hate mmorpgs. I thought at first it was just WoW taking over that I hated, but having played guild wars and experienced the same extreme desire to play for hours and hours without gaining anything, I decided it was my character. Seems I love them, and hate them, so best to stay away :(

The bad news is that the whole of the original Dev Team quit/were fired from Blizzard a couple of years ago, so who is writing D3?

Pretty sure they made their own studio. The people who are making Hellgate:London.

D3 needs to stick to its roots - I loved the whole button-mashing, sword-blazing, spell-wasting approach to D2, taking on hordes of monsters with a big group of mates.

Keep the principles of D2, give it a big graphical update, expand on the classes, items, quests and monsters and I'll be happy.

i'd prefer it if if D3 was more a combination of D1 and 2. Diablo had a great atmosphere which was lacking in D2 and the fact that the classes could use each others weapons and skills to a lesser extent was fun. However D2 had the massive replayability and the thousands of items to collect, also the multiplayer (especially on a lan) was absolutely divine at times. I'm very much looking forward to D3, I just hope Blizzard give it the attention it deserves.

I've been looking forward to Hellgate for ages.. It looks amazing! Can't be bothered with WoW but I loved the Diablo series and as Hellgate is written by the Diable team then it gets my vote...
