I've posted plenty in the official D3 thread but mine (and other peoples) hints/tips/advice questions seem to get lost in the masses of general posts about the game a lot of the time so I thought it might be an idea to have a separate thread for just asking for in-game tips & advice??

As for me, can anyone tell me if there is any benefit in equipping my Monk with Monk-only gear or should I just be picking the highest DPS weapon I can??

Highest DPS weapon you can as far as I know. Monk specific just means that others can't equip them, not that they give any dps boost to monks in particular (though I assume they will always have stats on them preferable for monks)

Few tips I have found useful but others may already know of are

- turn elective mode on in gameplay options. Allows skills to be mapped to any hotkey, I.e can have 2 out of defensive tree on bars instead of just one.

- holding down ctrl while mousing over items on the ground allows you to preview their stats before picking them up

- Advanced tooltips give info such as % damage increase on skills etc

- pressing alt makes items on the ground show their names again for 10 secs.

Thanks - great tips!!

How about dual-wielding? I've read conflicting posts on how your DPS is calculated and I'm never sure whether a higher DPS single weapon trumps dual-wield!?!?!

For example, is a two-handed weapon doing say, 25DPD, better or worse than dual wield at 20DPS each??

I'm not entirely sure tbh. From what I've heard (and observed):

- dual wielding gives you a slight attack speed increase

- two handed is not worth it to me. Never found any weapons that have high enough damage that justify the lower speed and the fact you're going down to one item that has bonuses instead of two

Nawh, had a Wizard only Hat drop with ONLY strength and magic find.

Also on the loot side, I personally prefer putting it into toggle mode (game options) and rebinding the default alt to f9 and keeping it always on.
Although 10 seconds is usually always enough.

If you open your character screen and loot at the stats on the left, there is a 'damage' number. Equip the 2 weapons, and equip the one hander. Whichever number is higher is the highest dps. Of course you have to take into account for yourself whether you want to hit slower and harder, or faster and less (faster and less generates more rage/spirit/whatever so you get to use more skills too)

Generally as a monk you want dual wield to be honest.

Up to yourself and what suits your playstyle and skill loadout.

Some things to remember, some classes such as monk build spirit per attack, so faster attacks = more spirit.

Also, there are some abilities like monks seven sided attack that does 7 attacks with some bonus weapon dmg, if you have a weak weapon it'll do 7 weak attacks, if you have a really slow but very high damage weapon it'll do 7 powerful hitting attacks.

So 2h or dual 1h depends on your class and what skills you plan to use.

I've found that there's not much in it.

Had two rare hand bows vs a rare bow + quiver and total DPS was about the same. Damage was higher on the bow, but more attacks per second on the hand bows.

I think it's quite balanced and you're better off picking weapons based on your style, skills and other gear. :)

An easy tip for hasnt been mentioned on here yet.

- Holding down the shift key makes your char stand still while you frantically mash left click :).

Quality tip!!!!!

THIS is what I'm taking about!!!

I'd have never seen that in the main thread!! ;)

i have found, as a Wizard at least, that holding down left click while holding shift produces a faster rate of fire of my arcane missile's than single clicking for each ones does. However I have no idea if the same can be said for melee combat.

Has anyone had any joy with levelling up the blacksmith on the early levels??

I'm level 15 with my Monk and spent around 10-12k levelling up the blacksmith until it flashed up that he was a higher level but even then, the items he could produce weren't even on a par with what I already have!?!?!

Also, I'm tending to salvage everything blue or yellow if I have no use for it into the blue essence or yellow tooth-thingy - should I be doing this or is it better lobbing them on to the AH?

I've got about 120 of the blue essence stuff but no real use for it due to the blacksmith issue above!?!?!
