Hi guys. I downloaded the Diablo 3 starter version last night and went through it and enjoyed it.

I never played Diablo 1 or 2 or any similar genre of this type but i was thinking of purchasing D3, but after some reading this morning Torchlight 2 popped up along my reading.

From what i have gathered it seems that people rate the gameplay of TL2 over D3.

For someone who is just starting off in this genre which one would be recommended?

Thanks

Torchlight 2, once the devs release mod tools, the game will be fantastic (based on original Torchlight's mod base).
I find Diablo 3 more polished, but very repetitive and slightly dull with regards to the storyline (Evil demons blah.. blah... world at end...blahddy blah.... unhappy Paladin because his armour is not shiny enough... blah!).
At least the Torchlight series do have humour to them, especially dungeon hunting with a poodle!

Diablo 3 is much better now than it was at release and the months after.

I think there's more life in it long term, even if Torchlight is the better game for the moment.

This really. 1.0.5 made Diablo 3 a lot better. Things will only continue to get better.

I would recommend Diablo 3 over Torchlight 2 for someone new to the genre. I have both, and Torchlight 2 is just not a good contender for the "My First Loot 'em Up" award; it is way more unforgiving and harder to understand, Diablo 3 is very straight forward and easy to just get into.

I'm not saying your derp or anything :p just Diablo 3 is easier to get to grips with for someone new to the genre.

i think it depends on what makes you tick in these type of games:

- loot drops - torchlight 2 all the way, it drops like confetti and is usually something interesting. even post patch, the window for gear improvements in diablo in inferno mode is so small, the chances of something good dropping are slim. i've played loads of hours and still not found a set item.

- environments, gameplay - diablo 3 hands down. the monk is the single best class i have ever played in any game ever (pretty much). it never gets old punching a mob and watching it fly accross the screen or exploding into small pieces. torchlight 2 doesn't capture that same feeling, it doesn't "feel" as good.

- shopping - diablo 3 has an auction house, enuff said. i hate it personally, it is very very difficult to get to the end of the game without using it (see loot section). but if you like shopping you might like it :P

- price - torchlight 2 is cheaper, about half the price if not more.

so yeah, they are the things that i look for in these games. both have good points, both have bad, but for topline criteria it's a good start.
