Diablo 3 to use Havoc physics

loads of things use havok physics. i really dont think they are gonna shut out nvidia from physics. lol.

for example all the games in the orange box

ATI aren't doing Havok in the same way that Nvidia are doing PhysX. The way ATI is doing it is they will intercept the Havok calls and then use the GPU to do them if it's feasible, this means that Dev's don't have to specifically program for certain hardware. So basically any software Havok has the chance to be accelerated when ATI put it in the drivers.

Note that we are not talking about Havok FX here, as that no longer exists. We are talking about optimization for Havok and related Havok suites. Havok itself isn't going to be making specific "GPU" calls, we'll be looking to intercept the calls made by Havok to the CPU and, for the workloads that make sense, run them on the GPU. All this will be transparent to the developer.

yes, but less than the performance loss of the cpu calculating the physics

At low resolution perhaps, but what about high resolutions when the GPU is the bottleneck and not the CPU?

Also, will it consume more graphics card memory? with Vista's Aero GUI and Havok physics running that will be quite a chunk of graphics memory.

It will be interesting to see how well it works it seems like a good idea if implemented well.
