Diagnosing a problem - Card, driver or game?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but it's a problem that could be the graphics card related.

I've recently bought a 290x (Sapphire) from this fine establishment and in terms of performance it's brilliant however when playing BF4 it crashes from time to time. In fact, it's rare that I get to complete a game!

So, this leads me to believe that it could be:
  • Graphics Card - Hardware problem? The card is noisy and hot but that's normal, I can live with that and I've actually increased the fan speed to try and see if it's a heat issue with the card.
  • Graphics Card Driver - Software problem? I'm using the latest driver (Catalyst 13.11)
  • Battlefield 4 - Application problem? All fully up to date but there have been plenty of issues reported with this game

How do I diagnose the problem? How do I know which is causing the problem? If it's a hardware issue then I need to swap the card asap, driver issue then I'd likely swap the card for an nVidia! Game problem? Well... not much I can do there!

I don't mind getting techie but I don't know where to start. Thanks!

the rest of your system specs would be useful, including your PSU

Quite right! And that actually gives me a clue... Corsair 450W PSU!

i5-3750k
8GB RAM
ASROCK Z77E-ITX
OCZ SSD

The fact that you asked what PSU I had suggests that could be quite significant then!

I'd happily buy a new one if necessary.

BF4 can still be a very flakey experience even the game fully updated and the latest 9.4 beta drivers.

Seems to vary wildly across different servers though.

That 450W PSU probably isn't helping, though I've not seen my 290 use more than 185W according to GPU-Z.
