I've just recently taken up some job by job part time work repairing pcs. After a week of doing this I realise I'm in major need of something... A way to diagnose problems lol. Quickly if pos. Most of the time its something obvious and a quick windows reinstall or even a checkdisk or system restore can fix it. But every nown and again theres a tricky problem I cant figure out. I had one today where the machine was blue screening and when I went to reinstall it left the cursor flashing on the screen. I tried installing and it said the hd had problems. New hd in and same problem.

Basically thats just one of the errors I get ofc being in this fun area of work. And I'm hoping someone has insight into a cool toolkit / collection from some group somewhere which would help (preferably in DOS, from boot) diagnose errors easier.

Yeah but my thread title was about software, and my example problem was an inability to reinstall windows.

No offence but been in a job that requires diagnostics both hardware and software should entail someone not really to ask questions on the topic you mentioned. It's all diagnostics, which includes process of elimination regardless of what system.
