Ok so i joined Virgin Media 10 months ago on XXL package, 50Mb broadband, 1HD box, 2 standard boxes, £46per month.

Now i've go to move back home with my family who are on BT 9Mb Tiscali (). So i insert their post code into VM website who say "sorry we're not in your area... blah blah". But my dad said every house on the street has a small square cover in the pavement reading Diamond Cable.

So i go back onto VM website who now say "sorry we need more information about the services you want, give us your number so we can call blah blah"

Any idea if these manhole covers are relics of Diamond Cable or are these infact cable lines they can run off?

Going from 50MB (some times 54) to 9Mb does not compute.

Doing a quick Google I think NTL took over Diamond Cable and Virgin Media teamed with NTL, so I guess its possible. Although the exchange will need to be enabled with Virgin Media I think, so check Samknows and see if it is.

Cable broadband availability
The following information details the availability of cable broadband in your area.

Virgin Media cable is not available in your area
Smallworld Media cable is not available in your area.

Gutted, totally gutted.

It does show an exchange about half a mile away with Virgin Media available.
Maybe i can pay them £60,000 to dig up the road & run a cable down to my house. :D

Its got nothing to do with exchanges. The post code will give a rough indication of coverage, but not all roads within that area will be covered.

I'm surprised they didn't continue with their network. Worth asking the neighbours?

That was 1998 .

It must have been an old cable television network, but must not be used!

Same way as there are still rediffusion manholes in places.

Yea this is most likely case.

I always assumed the exchange needed a cable backhaul or something! Learn something new etc etc.

Lucky you, I went from 50Mb with Virgin (where I almost always got 6MB/s) to my parents house where the fastest I can get is 200KB/s. :(

I have to wait until the new year before my exchange is enabled for FTTC and there's no guarantee my street will get it.

/OT.

Nazca, i feel for you. 200KB/s can only be described as torture, worse than this epic music i found on a random Bugatti Veyron advert (you were warned)

Have to see what a ADSL-2 router can do when i move in.
ADSL available at ~7Mbps
ADSL2+ available at ~22.8Mbps
Some cable services available
