Diamond Jubilee - why this weekend?

aparently this jubilee **** shutting down the country will have cost us 2.4bn

Apparently it has probably made us more than that and some financial bod said that the figure is much less so it's a net gain for the economy. Don’t forget that people will now go back to work feeling happy so productivity will increase. It’s been a winner for all!

*cannot* believe there are people in this world that think the monarchy is a bad thing, they make extreme amounts of money for the UK, way in excess of what they cost us, I think they cost each person 2p a year... NOT MUCH.

Suffice to say there are they only family in the UK who 'live off the state' and also give back many times over....as you know most people living off the state in the UK are a waste of carbon.

The four-day Jubilee weekend has boosted UK tourism spending by an estimated £700m.

While the effect of the extra bank holiday on the economy is estimated to be a loss of £1.2bn,

1200m - 700m = 500mil loss
but it will be more than that because off all the extra security and demand on infastructure wont be included in those figures

i guess the 2.4bn figure i saw on i think it was the bbc website was talking about the whole weekend+monday/tuesday.

if everyone in the uk sends me 2p a year i will quickly turn that into a net gain for the economy aswell

If you can turn it into a big a gain as the queen does, as well as managing your costs as effectively then I'll but everyone elses 2p in as well as mine.

I feel this argument is completely redundant though. Getting rid of the monarchy does not change history. If the history of this country is a draw, it will continue to be so.

Many many many people still visit Hampton Court, even though the monarchy doesn't live there. It's a huge tourist draw because of its rich history. My point is that getting rid of the monarchy does not change history, it changes the future.

Yet it's the history that draws tourists. That's why I don't think that getting rid of the monarchy will have a massive impact on the tourism industry.

Little immediate impact but surely if they go away, over time they will be as well known as the Romanovs and even 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall i'm not aware of millions of tourists flocking to see their former residences.

Our monarchy regenerates itself and maintains interest and relevancy. They provide a stable head of state that is above political meddling and its a system that has evolved to serve us well enough over the previous thousand years. I don't see the case for changing something that isn't broken. Especially since we'll be replacing one head of state with another for little gain.

I don't think anyone really cares or even knows about this weekend anyway...

Oh rly!

What a Plum

I like the Royals. I think they are good for the country. I think the national anthem needs changed though, to a British as opposed to an English one. Doesn't make the Union too attractive to us when the national anthem mentions crushing Scots ;)
