Did AMD just kill off RTX

Also it's just not that great. RDR2 for example looks better as-is than most of the RTX games.

Some of the tacked on use of effects isn't that great and as much as they pushed the boat out with some areas of the graphics in RDR2 it pales compared to what can be done even now with a decent ray tracing implementation.

No it doesn't
RTX in it's it's current form only handles reflections and certain aspects of lighting/shadows. Graphical fidelity is dependent on far more than that. That does not make them instantly the best looking games, as it would mean Quake RTX which implements raytracing the most would be the best looking game.
In fact I would argue art style ,art design and overall technical implementation is far more important than special effects.Look at a games such as Crisis or Crysis 3 - they looked better than many later games which technically used later more advanced techniques.

Since we know there is going to be more then 1 console released I still wonder if they will go for a halo price point? $899-$999

Probably still cheaper than an equivalent PC with the latest overpriced milking device....sorry graphics card.

2080ti gets way more than 25 fps in Quake 2 RTX depending a bit on resolution. One of the things with older games is that often their lighting/effects are fairly simple to strip out and replace with a path tracing implementation - with newer games all kinds of cheats and workarounds, etc. are used to create advanced effects that aren't trivial to remove without potentially breaking other things plus a lot of older games have the full source released so can be updated without lots of messy licensing issues.

I would take some time to browse through the latest updated Quake 2 RTX screenshots here for instance and try and extrapolate how those lighting effects would enhance a game that had more geometric detail, etc. than Quake 2 does... https://steamcommunity.com/app/1089130/screenshots/
