Did/do intel do a k (unlocked) version of the i3 ?

This exactly.

There is a Pentium anniversary edition coming soon but I think they have missed the point with it. You need a Z87 or Z97 board to overclock the cpu which is pointless. You would have to spend a lot more than the cpu to get it to overclock. If it will overclock on a cheap H81 board it would be perfect, fun bit of overclocking. I am sure there are enthusiasts that will have a Z87 or be buying a Z97 and they will buy one of these cpus to see what it can do but people paying a decent amount of cash for the board will generally not have an issue with buying a good K series i5/i7.

I'm suddenly imagining a K series i3 with HT and a big cooler... Feels like it should be a champion overclocker, what with the low stock TDP; easy to keep it at safe operating temps. Got a few programs that would definitely benefit from the resulting single thread performance...

Maybe if we all ask Intel very nicely? :)
 
LOL I wouldn't have thought that they would be interested. I would have thought that it costs about the same to produce a i3 as it would an i5/i7(Not including development) so having a nice overclocking i3 that they could sell for about £100 would take money out of their pockets from the people that would normally purchase and overclock an i5.
 
The Clarkdale i3's were beasts. 2 Cores 4 Threads, and OC'd like champions, I believe I had my i3-530 sat at 4.4Ghz (from 2.93GHz), and it ran unbelievebly cool while blitzing any game at the time :D

They were very popular, too popular, hence Intel locked them down in all future i3's so people would buy the i5/i7 'K' processors instead.
 
Just have a look what 8pack did with R7 240, there is a reason u can't oc i3 as mentioned before people would jump on i3 and clock it to i5

50% overclock, nice! Haven't seen that since the Pentium II days. Oh Celeron 300 @ 450, you little beauty...
 
i only just beat a stock i3 3220 in cinebench with a 540 i3 @ 4.2ghz so just goes to show how much modern cpu's have come
